Travelling with photography

Traveling with photography is not about the camera. It’s not even about the beautiful images we create. It is about telling powerful stories. Photography is a tool for creating awareness and understanding across cultures, communities, and countries; a tool to make sense of the commonalities in the world we share. I believe the way to find common ground is by seeing yourself in others.

A lot of my work involves traveling to foreign countries and living in remote places. My job is to become invisible and get close to people and wildlife, so I can bring their stories to life. It’s no different being in my home state of Montana than it is being in a country ten thousand miles away. For me, the intimate moments always matter the most. Photography has been my passport to meeting people, learning, and experiencing new cultures.

 Research

Firstly, study in depth everything you can about the place you’ll be visiting, especially local newspapers and social media. Local stories that may not reach the large international papers give me hints about what’s really trendy in a place. Create relationships before you even get on the plane. Make a point of supporting other photographers and foundations. Nothing is as valued as another photographer who has been there. I like to use social media to meet people, or through websites.

 Be authentic and sensitive

The calm way to make convincing, real photographs of people is by being faithful. Making truthful images of people is not a trick. It’s a skill a photographer can develop, which requires respect for the subject and building a relationship in the time you have together. Successful pictures of people almost never capture from a distance. Put away the telephoto lens and become part of the moment.

Keep good notes

You think you will remember everyone you meet, but time and age fade the memory. In the past, I used to take down people’s names and a short description of what they were wearing, or some distinguishing feature about them. I would get back home, start looking through my notes and discover many of the girls I was photographing wearing similar-looking pink dresses. Now I carry my mobile, loaded with a model-release app, which allows me to take pictures and get their consent at the same time. I also make a practice of writing captions and labeling images right after a trip ends, and not delay.

Dress appropriately

Fit in with the scene, understanding is always the best. Again, sensitivity for the values and norms of where you are going a long way to being accepted. A female photographer may want to wear a scarf to cover her head in some cultures. It’s one of the most visible ways to show respect for local sensibilities. I also avoid looking like the stereotypical photographer.

Trust your instincts

I rely on the humanity of strangers everywhere I go. It is real and out there—most people are lovely and kind. It’s a delightful world out there, but remember to be on the protector, as unfortunately, bad clouds can form and pressures can escalate. Trust your instincts and don’t ever accept or be calmed into a false intellect of security. Even if it feels safe, don’t let your lookout down. I have found that creating relationships in advance is the best way to prepare.

 Give back

Your subjects are giving of themselves. Don’t misuse their gift of sharing their lives. Don’t treat them like models. Send back some prints, cherish the moment, and treat them well. Don’t promise if you don’t intend to deliver. In this age where many people are digitally connected, it has become easier than ever to email a jpeg to an address for your subjects to share.

Have fun

Yes, getting the shot is important, but be thankful that you have the opportunity to even be where you are. Pinch yourself and enjoy the moment. It relaxes everyone, and the pictures and stories are better for it.

Tips for shopping

Travel light

You can cut down on baggage when traveling out, by buying clothes and toiletries for your trip on arrival, especially if you travel to a low-cost destination with good shopping opportunities. You can save weight on your way home by giving used clothes to a local charity.

Research/observe price levels before shopping

With any possibility of a major purchase, before you begin your trip learn what prices might apply at home, in stores, and by Internet-based sellers. At first arrival in a foreign country, you can only guess whether an offer is cheap or expensive by local standards. In tourist areas, such as airports, hotel shops, and cultural attractions, prices tend to be inflated. As you pass by several stores elsewhere, you might learn the commonly accepted price for regular items. Remember the selection and prices at the airport or hotel, so you know what purchases can wait until you return there.

Rule of thumb for small purchases, calculator for big ones

Use a rough rule of thumb to compare prices. Let’s say you live in the United States and visit Japan, while the yen is 88 to a dollar. Since 88 is nearly 100, the rule of thumb would be deleting two zeros from the price (those used to math’s could additionally adjust with 7/8 when needed). This is a good method for quickly finding out whether you would pay ¥290 for a takeaway pastry. However, if buying a camera for ¥35,000, you should know that it costs about $310 at home and use a calculator.

Electrical systems

Beware of incompatible electrical systems, region-coded media, and incompatible video formats when importing electronics; likewise, if you mean to bring a vehicle back, be sure it can register for use in your home country. The beautiful thing about standards is that there are so many from which to choose.

Warranty issues

Also be aware of warranty issues. For example, a manufacturer’s warranty on a camera or electronic goods generally applies only to equipment sold by an authorized dealer in that country. A buyer from a western country may save quite a bit by buying in a duty-free port. But if the equipment goes wrong, he won’t get free warranty service locally. Indeed, some manufacturers refuse to repair items they make that are sold on the “grey market” even to the point that they will not sell necessary parts to independent repair facilities.

Shopping comes last

There are several reasons to save shopping until the end of your stay:

  • You know how much money you can spare
  • More familiar with price levels, availability, and quality (see above)
  • You minimize luggage during your journey and the risk of losing items.

Customs duty can be part of your costs

  • Shop knowing what the duty-free limits are for your home country, and what they will charge if you exceed them. Regulations can vary surprisingly, e.g., the U.S. or Canada do not charge duty on unmounted gems but do on jewelry, so bringing in the same stones mounted may exceed your duty-free allowance. Certain items must be declared and totaled toward your duty allowance(s) regardless of price or value, e.g. tobacco or alcohol.
  • If you plan to take anything expensive with you (camera equipment and jewelry are most common), see Proof of what you already own for information on avoiding duty when you re-import it to your home country.

Health is wealth

“Health is wealth ” Whether you have a “staycation” or travel to the farthest corners of the Earth. You will be able to enjoy your travels more if you stay healthy. This article presents an introduction to good practices. Such as, how to live healthy, minimize risks, and deal with injuries and illness.

Living a healthy lifestyle

Regardless of where you plan on traveling, you are more likely to stay healthy. If you are already living a healthy lifestyle. Getting regular aerobic exercise increases your endurance. Also, enabling you to do more walking, hiking, swimming, skiing, or other more or less strenuous activities. You may want to partake on your trip, making it less likely that a tough climb will result in a heart attack, dizziness, or shortness of breath.

Vaccinations

Get any recommendations for vaccinations, starting 8 weeks before traveling, especially when traveling abroad to tropical or third-world areas. If you are traveling to a particular disease prone area, you may want to discuss immunoglobulin injections, which will make you immune to a host of diseases for months. Consult a doctor to identify exact needs, as it depends on the case and the individual. For info about specific vaccines, see the article on infectious diseases.

First aid kit

Especially if you are going to be doing hard hiking in remote areas, make sure you bring a first aid kit with you, including a tourniquet. You don’t want to be caught without in an extreme situation. Take a health kit of medications and first aid items. Ensure that the quantity of prescription medications, and other items that may be difficult to obtain while traveling, will last for the entire trip.

Travel insurance

Verify what your regular or credit card insurance will cover while away from home, and consider taking out travel insurance to cover any difference. Although travel insurance for lost luggage and delays will save some small costs or inconvenience, the cost of medical treatment or medical evacuation can be crippling if not covered by insurance. In some countries, an inability to show you are insure or can otherwise pay may lead to your being refuse treatment altogether.

During your trip

Guarding against injuries in accidents

Whether you are in a car or a plane, you are suggest to use a seatbelt. This is much more crucial when you are in the front seat of a car, wherein the event of a sudden stop, you risk crashing through the windshield.

Precautions against disease

Keeping clean is usually easy if you stay and eat at a business hotel. In a low-income country or in outdoor life, it is more of a challenge. Toilets are a risk factor.

Water contamination

Make sure you know whether the tap water of the places you’re visiting is safe to drink. In many instances, it is not safe to use tap water even to rinse your toothbrush, unless the water is boil. Similarly, be careful about drinks with ice. If the water is not safe to drink at room temperature, freezing it will not kill pathogens that can make you very sick. In some cities like Shanghai, there are restaurants that use reverse osmosis that filters out pathogens from tap water and use that tap water to make their ice. If that’s the case, the ice is safe, but when in doubt, look out!

Suggested Food contamination on The Trek

Food poisoning can happen anywhere, but the risk is greater in hot climates where food can go bad more quickly. Be careful about food that has been left out for hours, especially in hot weather that’s conducive to microbe reproduction. In addition, in countries where nightsoil (human excrement) is used for fertilizer (such as China), it is dangerous to eat raw fruits or vegetables unless they have a hard peel that can be discarded.

Also, fresh vegetables washed in possibly dirty water are a risk. In many countries, raw fruits and vegetables are usually quite safe, but if you are in doubt about the safety of raw, unpeel fruits or vegetables anywhere, don’t eat them. Also, even if you are purchasing a slice of melon if you know whether the vendor use a dirty machete to chop it or it was cut cleanly, you can gauge the possible danger from eating it. Finally, there are diseases and parasites you can get from eating meat, poultry, or fish that has not been cooked to a sufficient temperature to kill them.

What to do if you get sick or injure ?

If there is a reliable emergency number for ambulances in the country you are visiting, make sure you have it memorized or take it with you. For GSM phones 112 should connect you to the local emergency number. You can try 112 or 911 with any phone and hope they are forward to the right place. Your insurance company may also have a helpline.

If you are dealing with a situation that is not an emergency, but you are nevertheless really ill, don’t be a hero: Get a recommendation for a good doctor (preferably one who speaks your language, but some of the content of our phrasebooks may help you in extremes), and go and see him/her. If you are traveling in a remote area where either there are no doctors or your situation is too serious for you to be able to travel to a doctor in your condition, find out who the reputable local traditional medical practitioner is, and see him/her. The herbs s/he prescribes for you could be just the thing you need.
