Makalu base camp trek – October and November 2025/2026

Makalu Basecamp  trek in  October/November is the best season to trek in Makalu Barun National Park. October and November are the autumn season  in Nepal. After several monsoon months in Nepal,  we have another great fall start with blue sky, sunshine days, less rain, and not so many clouds in the mountains from mid-September till the end of December. Then, most of the trekkers come to the Himalayan country Nepal for Trekking, Climbing, and tour in this preferable weather in autumn. Compared to other trekking areas in Nepal, Makalu-Barun national park was open for trekkers in 1992, and Mount Makalu (alt 8486m) was climbed in 15 May 1955, for the first time by Lionel Terray, and Jean Couzy from France.

While you trek to Makalu base camp, it doesn’t matter late or early, but there is no other place where people can find one of the great adventure experiences of trekking, Climbing including different beauty of natural flora-fauna, cultural, social, massive big Makalu Mountain with many other over 7000m, 6000m. As well as the arum and Barun river is possible to see only at Makalu Barun National Park.

In the Makalu base camp trek, There are not made any decent hotels and guest houses yet. So the tourist have to spend overnight at basic typical homestays. The basic homestays are available in every places to reach Makalu base camp. Many companies and tourists still prefer organizing their won camping to feel more adventurous and provides verities of continental Western food. Which is a little bit more expensive because all camping gear, food, cruise members, need to manage from Kathmandu. Which is not possible to manage locally in Khadbari or Tumblingtar.

But those tourists who also like to feel a bit of Nepali way, sleeping in dometry hall sharing  homestay with families and other trekkers, eat basic Nepali food (Dal Bhat) then, the trek costs bit cheaper. Also, you can just hire guide and porters to do Makalu base camp trek to reduce the cost. The homestays will be available until Makalu base camp, but for those who wants to extend the trek and go further different areas like Sherpani-col, Amphu Laptsa, Mera, or Kanchenjunga they have no other options then just camping.

Makalu base camp, and Sherpini – Col pass trek in details:

In Makalu Barun national park there is an another hardcore adventure trip called Sherpani-col high pass trek and the altitude is over 6000m/19,685ft. Adventure high pass trek is the extremly tough trek in the world. In between Makalu base camp trek and Sherpani-col high pass trek, up to Makalu base camp the itinerary is same but Sherpani-col pass trail split from Makalu base camp and goes further north-west.  But the trek to Makalu base camp return same way back to Tumlingtar. Also, Sherpani-col pass trek, we need to fly from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar (450m/1476ft), it takes  about 55 minute to get there. Tumlingtar will be the lowest altitude for this high adventure trek, eastern Nepal’s, Sankhuwasava district.

You will follow Arun river for a while and take right side up towards Bhotebash via Mane Bhanjyang. When you are in Bhotebash you feel a little bit cooler breeze coming from the hills, after few hours 0f driving in hot temperature. While you reach Chichila from where you can see Makalu mountain range in distance, then again you drive down to Num which is the last point of driving. Tumblingtar to Num the drive will take around 4 to 5 hours.

You should stay in Num for overnight to prepare for walking to Makalu base camp. The basic lodge in Num, at least you can have good sleep and get some common Nepali food as well as some Chinese food. The next destination will be Seduwa which goes steep down again to Arun River and steep up to Seduwa, in 7 to 8 hours of walking you can reach in Seduwa. The tempreture will be very hot so you might be sweating all day. Seduwa to Tashi gaun is easy to walk for a few hours and preparing for some longer walk.

After staying in Tashigaun, the next destination is kongma dada. Which is long climb most of the day and it takes around 8 to 10 hour to reach in Kongma dada throughout forest walking almost all day. This day is good warming up for altitude and a little bit of training for Sherpani-col pass. Kongma-la the next day  small pass which is not that high altitude but ground fugue most of the time and that makes little difficult to climb up and down to Dobato. This is again a long day and  it takes around 9 to 10 hours but  depanding on the weather conditions and walking pace you can reach at Dobato less than 9 hours.

After Dobato, it is just down to Barun river and easy up to Yangri kharka, which is beautiful Makalu valley. Yangri Kharka and Makalu base camp valley is the most beautiful scenery of Makalu range mountain day by day more and more once you reach in Makalu base camp it is just amazing beautiful of world’s top 5th biggest mountain base camp. Explore the barun glacier and rest is needed for the next destination.

Enjoying in a base camp then, you can go towards Swiss camp, walking distance looks not so long but walking into glacier makes it harder but still possible to make it by 4 to 5 hours with enjoying the front view of Makalu mountain.

Swiss camp to High camp is harder to accent up because of rocky hillside walking.  At the elevation of 5600m/18,372ft. called Sherpani-col high camp located in the front for huge Iceland. Preparing for next to Sherpani -col pass, you need to acclimatize here with some basic climbing training and to get used to the altitude. Guide and climbing guide may prepare for the rope to fixed to top off of Sherpani -col to make it easier for the next day to everyone. Early Morning Starts from high camp to sherpani -col top, next is a challenging job. It may take 7 to 8 hours to reach the top.

First 5 to 6 hour you can manage to reach the button of Sherpani-col, every step after high camp Sherpani-col top looks very near but due to crevasses and hard snow makes it harder to keep walking. After struggling some hours with less oxygen to accent to the buttom of Sherpani-col to the top, you have to go through rope to the top for 200m/0.2mile. Climb up is not easy for the porters too with carrying load. For the safety everybody should use the rope. When you are at the top of Sherpani -col at 6190m/20,308ft. you can see west -col and huge snow field of Baruntse camp II in the west and stunning view of mount Makalu.

Sherpini Col pass
Near the top of Sherpini -Col pass

To go to camp site,  it takes time because of  250m/0.2mile. steep rocky down hill part. at this point, everyone need to make a queue and go turn by turn. Normally the guide will make a decision first to cross that part depending on the situation. The clients will go with Sherpa, and the kitchen crew and porters  will go together. For kitchen crews and the porters carrying huge load will  be very tough  to go down, if the bags go wrong direction for few meters then the bag will fall down to deep crevasses which will be very hard to pullback to  the right direction.

So, when we cross the pass one person stays in turning point of ice fall and other person will be at the buttom to collect safely and one person stays on top to manage load to send slowly down walking to Baruntse camp II. This day will be very tough day and it will take many hours.

It is huge ice field end of the other side of field is Baruntse Camp II,  where you spent overnight. Similar strategy like Sherpani- col high camp, here, also climbing guide and other crews will go to prepare for West-col to make sure rope is fixed and for other preparetion. Small accent and long descent for next day you will reach Baruntse.

This place is probably one of the most beautiful places on this whole adventure trip.  Spendig the night at lap of Barunte with seeing massif mountain Makalu, definitely there is no other place to similar like this. You will be  sleeping over 6000m, so,  this can be tired and hard to sleep on this altitude. The next morning, descending down  from west-col is one of the hardest pass in this trip among other passes.

From west –col during descending, lose rock may fall and can hit anybody so, you need to be careful. The descending method will be as same as Sherpani-col, the guide needs to sent  down clients first one by one and then after other crew member and porters load via rope. Even completely reach in the button of west-col still, you need to be careful to falling into the crevasse. The trail shape are always changing due to  heavy avalanche  during heavy snowfall time. after struggling to decent to Baruntse camp I then, you will decent more to Baruntse high camp for overnight stay. This day could be the hardest day for sure.

The next day to Amphu Laptsa high camp, which won’t be any high pass, just trek up to high camp for 5 to 6 hours. One more day at this place is rest to prepare for another high pass Amphu laptsa(5900m.). From high camp to Amphu Laptsa, it takes around 2 to 3-hour maximum to reach on top, near the top again you need to climb with rope but this one is easier and much safe then the last passes of this trip. On the top of Amphu Laptsa, you can again start seeing Everest regions mountain.

The one last difficult descend from the top of Amphu Laptsa to Imza lake. You will descend about 200 to 250 meter steep down towards South and turn  North-West to descend by rope. The descending proccess will be the as same as previous passes. Finally, you will arrive Imza lake and start trek towards Chhukung. After waking for 2 to 3 hours you will arrive in Chhukug. Finally, the hardest part of the trek will be done here and you will continue trek dwon to Lukla for few days.

When you arrive at Lukla, the trek will end here and you can celebrate the trek with all the staff members with great trekking experience with nature explore trek team. Next morning you will take a short flight to Kathmandu from Lukla for 35 minutes.  You will be invited for authentic Nepali meal with cultural dance for dinner.

You don’t need more clothes during the walking period. Next day or day 3rd of this trek you will trek from Seduwa to Tashi gaon today is very easy to walk, but this will help us to save energy for further days treks,  Tashi Gaun is one of the popular Sherpa habitation in this trek, more than 1000 to 1200 Sherpa people live here permanently, afternoon you can visit the Monastery and museum, while you walking around Tashi Gaun (Villages)  you will see how Sherpa people stay in mountains with great cooperate with each other, and you can also see their basic daily lifestyle.  Some groups also make a day rest here its help for acclimatization to go higher pass to Sherpa –Col pass (alt 6160m), after Tashi Gaun you can’t find a big town, only you will cross fewer local tea house, Cow and ship statements, continually on the day 4th of this trek you will walk Tashi Gaun to Kongma la (alt 3790m) dada, mainly you will be ascending, generally it takes in between  8 to 10 hours,  this is your big walking day, along the trek you will walk through the jungle and Sherpa farming land, some people say about today it’s a  big ascending day for earlier training or preparation to go high adventure trek to Makalu base camp and Sherpini – Col pass. on the day 5th of this trek, you shall trek to Satdobatoo, via Kongma-la pass cross,  which is not that high pass, but most of the time fuggy is staying on this hill,  so it makes a bit harder even its lower altitude pass,  After Dobato it is just down to Barun River and easy up to yangrikharka, which is a beautiful Makalu valley. Yangri kharka and Makalu base camp valley it is the most beautiful scenery of Makalu Range Mountain, you shall see nicer and close from you.

Sherpini – Col pass harder parts start from here.

Sherpini col pass C

Makalu Base camp and Sherpini Col pass trek trail in brife

From Makalu base camp Trek, we trek towards to Swiss camp, walking distance looks not so long total walking distance is only 4 to 5 hours, but walking into the glacier & stone takes more hours, along the trek,  today you will be enjoying with a magnificent view of Makalu Mountains( alt 8481m)make your feel very  happy, and you won’t feel that much harder walk into the rocky parts, from Swiss camp to High camp (alt. 5650m.) it is harder to accent up into the rocky hill, Non as called Sherpani-col high camp located in the front for huge Iceland,  In high camp you will have  one more rest day for preparing for  Sherpani -Col pass alt 6119, you need to acclimatize here, your climbing guide will teach you basic  climbing training and get used to altitude, after breakfast, climbing team will go for prepare the rout  fixing the  rope to the top of Sherpani – Col pass,  today  hard work help  for  makes it easier for crossing the high pass,

Following days, early morning starts from high camp to Sherpani  Col top is  very  challenging  parts of this high pass basically  take 7 to 8 hour to reach the top,  5 to 6 hour you can manage to reach the button of Sherpani-Col, walk-in between high camp to Sherpini-Col pass is quite interesting because of every step looks very near, but due to crevasses   and hard snow  frozen makes it harder to keep continue to walk and it takes more hours,  somehow  after struggling some hours lack of oxygen  for  accent to the button of Sherpani- Col, then you have to go through the  rope to top for 200meters, until the top to reach it’s ok it is not very steep but still for porters to climb up it is not easy with carrying the load.

Now finally . you are on the top of Sherpani –Col alt 6190 meters you can see west -Col and huge ice field of Baruntse camp II  in the west and stunning view of Mount Makalu it is always with you,  in between  Sherpini – Col top to another side in crevasses  Iceland is very challenging parts, everyone should stay safe in rope and descend 250m. steep rocky mountains, here you need a knowledgeable climbing guide, minimum in big the group we  need a three basic  knowledgeable Sherpa  team, always in mountain climbing period  Sherpa make the first plan or, the decision how to descend in the safe zone all  group members and  kitchen crew team  with safety and security, after fixing the rope here all groups members should descend one by one first then Nepali kitchen crews and finally Sherpa will descend the kitchen goods slowly with safety and security  normally, if encase some goods or people  took the wrong direction then it  can fall down to deep crevasses,

Pull back to the right direction is very hard, require a  big  manpower and deep knowledge Sherpa team, as per plan from Sherpa team  they control in this dangerous descend parts  like this way, one person stay in the turning point of ice fall and one person in the button to collect safely and one person stay in top manage the load to send slowly down, after  safely  rescue in this hard decent parts, all groups, kitchen crews and equipment,  still you need to walk 4 to 5 hours in  gradual  ice parts,  and its huge big area  like 10 times bigger than a big football stadium ,  if encase a massive fuggy  in this part, some people lost the right direction then its dangers and can missed our life here, as a big record about people die in past, End of this flat area we make camp tonight, a similar strategy like Sherpani-Col high camp, here also climbing guide and other crews go to prepare for west-Col small accent and long descent for next day to make  sure rope condition and other preparation. This the part is most probably one of the most beautiful places in this whole adventure the trip, the lap of Barunte to sleep with seeing massif mount Makalu is definitely there is no other place to something similar like here, tonight is very hard to spend with this high altitude and sleep.

Next morning descending from west-Col, it is the hardest pass in this a trip among other passes in Everest and Makalu region, you have to descend at list promptly 300-meter street to Baruntse camp I from the west –Col,  during descending time lose rock may fall and can hit anybody so you need to be careful anytime, the mountains roles will be same like a yesterday in Sherpini –Col pass, with safety and security  Sherpa team, send group members first one by one and then after kitchen crew, porters and equipment,  Still, you can’t feel safe even completely reach in the button of west-Col still, you need to be careful rock can fall anytime and with crevasse, land and trail shape are always changing due to heavy avalanches during heavy snowfall time. After safely descending another side all groups, we trek to Baruntse camp I where we spend overnight.

Next-Day we trek to  Amphu laptsa high camp (alt 5430m) camper to Sherpini –Col & west Col pass Amphu laptsa high camp is not higher so you can have a good sleep after good ascending and descending, its only 4 to 5 hours walking distance in between Baruntse camp I,  from high camp to amphu laptsa it takes around 2 to 3-hour maximum to reach on top, today for final ascend to get top of Amphulaptsa pass (alt 5860m) you have to use rope,  but this one is easier and much safe and last passes, from top of AMPHULAPTSA PASSES Alt. 5860m you can see  Everest regions mountain, which is completely different than we show earlier from Sherpin Col and west Col pass from Makalu region, then we will onwards to descending other side base camp through the rope, aproxly  200 to 250 meter steep descending the south-north route, it’s your last the final hard part of this trek and its very challenging adventure pass and if we don’t have enough time to reach in Chukung then we stay at camp in Imse lake near Island peak base camp, if we have time and still enough energy to get in Chhukung then we trek to Chukung today directly from Amphulaptas base camp, definitely it’s another hard and big day, and then following fewer days are very easy trekking down to Chhukung,  Dingboche,  Namche, and Lukla before we fly back to  Kathmandu, in between Chhukung to Lukla we meet many trekkers,  who are heading up to Everest base camp trek, then we finally fly back from Lukla to Kathmandu and this is your adventures trip is over here with big memories and experience, definitely, you will always remember this incredible beautiful adventures trip in your lifetime.

Everest base camp trek in Spring 2025/2026

Overview

Discover the Everest base camp trek in Spring in the Khumbu region of Nepal, also known as the Sagarmatha National Park through our Discover open group expedition between mid-March to early May and late September to early November. EXPED does not operate EBC during Nepal’s monsoon period or in the winter.

Nepal hosts 8 of the World’s highest peaks, including the highest, Mount Everest. Trekking deep into the Himalayan Kingdom, the Khumbu region reveals stunning mountain views and the discovery of Nepal’s famous Sherpa’s. These wonderful friendly mountain people originally migrated in the late 1400’s / early 1500’s from eastern Tibet, by crossing over the Himalayan Mountains and settled in Nepal. They established their culture and lifestyle, which is known worldwide today for its simplicity, hospitality and heartwarming communities.

Namche bazaar
Beautiful Namche Bazaar (3,480m/11,417ft), gateway to Everest region.

‘NEPAL’ stands for ‘Never Ending Peace and Love’

You will be met on arrival at the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) Kathmandu-Nepal, and transferred to Hotel in Kathmandu for a 2 night stay. An evening welcome meal will be awaiting you. On the third day, early morning, you will be transferred and flown out to Lukla, a guaranteed interesting experience, where the EBC Trek begins. If possible, try and sit on the left side of the airplane as you will see your first view of the Everest region better.

Once landed at Lukla, your porters will be waiting for you. A quick final double check to ensure you has everything and you are on your way. The trek now starts in earnest. On the first day of the trek, most of the trail tends to be downhill but remember, ‘Nepali Flat’ means a lot of little ups and downs that generally gain no overall height in altitude.

The following day is very different and an awesome experience. Most of the day is taken up with repeatedly crossing the valley by magnificent wire bridges, which span the DudhKoshi River. You are now climbing steeply up towards Namche Bazaar, which is the capital of the Khumbu region. Namche will surprise you as it is reasonably large town. You’ll find good internet and Wifi connection here, as well as a great iily coffee and pastry. Take advantage of your acclimatization break here and enjoy your short stay of rest. From here on, the trek gets tougher and the facilities become thinner on the ground.

On leaving Namche, you will drop down before climbing up to reach Tengboche. Here you will find an incredible monastery and more jaw dropping views of AmaDablam, Lohtse and Everest. Trekking onwards, the next pause is Pheriche and then GorakShep. This is your last stop before Everest Base Camp. GorakShep is an isolated village set in a barren looking landscape. However, the bare rock strewn glacial zone has its own awesome natural beauty that only post glacial landscapes can achieve. Behind GorakShep, Kala Patter towers at an altitude of 5,545m, which is your next trek. The views of Everest are stunning and will leave you in awe. It is from GorakShep that you approach Everest Base Camp direct. The terrain you trek is reasonably flat but very rough and rocky on the approach. Once you arrive at EBC, you will rest for a while. Find the 2019 inscribed rock and take those photographs to show off your magnificent achievement.
