An ideal alternative to the Annapurna or Everest trek, the Langtang Valley trek offers outstanding views of numerous ice-clad 6,000 and 7,000-meter peaks of the main Himalayan ridge. Lying north of Kathmandu, this trek doesn’t require long trekking days and can be accomplished within 7 to 10 days.
The route to the Langtang Valley trek leads you through numerous beautiful rivers, pine, rhododendron, and bamboo forests, and several pastures of horses and yaks. The trail slowly turns to alpine meadows around Kanjing Gompa from where you can adore the view of Langtang Lirung.
The Langtang Valley is called the Valley of Glaciers for nothing. All along the route, you can admire the priceless views of Ganesh Himal, Langtang Lirung, Dorje Lakpa, Gangchempo, Porong Ri, and Yala Peak.
This trek also offers a unique opportunity for nature lovers who can witness and study the vast richness and diversity of plants, through deciduous, rhododendron, and bamboo forests. And for animal lovers, you can probably meet the gray langur monkeys, red pandas, and Himalayan black bears along the path. The sightings of yaks and horses are common along the route.
Our incredible journey to the Langtang Valley begins with our drive from Kathmandu to Syabrubensi. From here, our hiking expedition begins as we pass through several villages day by day. We will make our stop at Lama Hotel first, and then we trek to Langtang village and explore the Kyanjing Gompa.
We will spend a day at Kyanjing Gompa and ascend to Kyanjing Ri or hike to Tshergo-Ri viewpoint for the breathtaking views of ice-capped mountains. We will then trek back to Lama Hotel and Syabrubensi once more driving back to Kathmandu.
One of the shortest journeys in authentic Nepal, our Langtang Valley trek has everything to offer: nature walks through diverse landscapes, exceptional mountain views, shortest trek days, with rich cultural heritage.
Book now and reserve your seats for our upcoming visit to Langtang Valley.
Best for Family, Kids and Seniors
Our Langtang Valley trek is the best family vacation trip in Nepal suitable for small children and seniors. Away from the crowds, this trek can be the best alternative to the crowded and more popular Ghorepani Poon Hill trek.
First of all, the trek is easy with numerous lodges and teahouses to offer you comfortable accommodation along the route. They are quite simple but they offer a room with a toilet, 2 duvets, and pillows.
As an icing on the cake, you will hike for only 4 to 5 hours each day with adequate acclimatization time to the high altitude. Any healthy children and elderly can easily hike for this short duration. In addition, the trek to the village of Kyanjing Gompa is also quite easy and therefore suitable for beginners.
Why this trek is special?
Situated about 80 km north of Kathmandu, Langtang Valley borders Tibet. It has emerged as the special trekking destination for many trekkers who seek to avoid crowds and want to enjoy intact nature with comfort. If you are one of those who don’t know why this trek is special, we will tell you:
Kyanjing Gompa
Kyanjing Gompa offers everything from mountain landscapes to villages with blue roofs and views of snowy peaks that leave you speechless. It is the last town of the trek and a perfect destination to acclimatize the body against altitude sickness.
The village itself is surrounded by the remarkable views of the Kyanjing Ri and Tserko Ri peaks. The village has an ancient monastery and a traditional cheese factory.
Langtang National park
The Langtang Valley is a national park and is home to two of the country’s rarest and most endangered species, the red panda and the musk deer. It is home to different leopards, monkeys, and birds with semi-wild herds of yaks in the highlands. With a stroke of luck, you may encounter them in the jungle.
People
The Langtang Valley is mostly inhabited by Tibetan exiles and people of the Tamang ethnic group. They are the ones that make trekking have such a special character. You can live with families around the fireplace enjoy their Nepali songs and dance, and their locally prepared authentic food.
Landscape
The Langtang Valley offers a tour of different bioclimatic levels: we will walk from the subtropical thickets to the high mountain landscape, passing through the alpine forests of rhododendrons and conifers.
We will also see valleys of glacial origin, waterfalls, glacier fronts, high mountain pastures, cable bridges, and the snowy peaks that form this region of the Himalayas.
Opportunity to mountaineering
On the acclimatization day at Kanjing Gompa, you can live some mountaineering experience by ascending Tsergo Ri (4,983m), to marvel at the view of the immensity of the highest mountain range in the world.
Customs and traditions
This region is mainly inhabited by the Tamang people. They have their own language, clothing, and culture. Highly influenced by nearby Tibet, the Buddhist religion permeates every corner. Along the way, you will be able to see manis and stupas, and in each tea house, you will find a Buddhist altar.

Trip Information
Best season and time
The best time to do the Langtang Valley trek is during the Spring months from March to May and the autumn months from September to November. During the day, the sun will shine clearly spreading its warmth each day. A clear blue sky allows us to view the mountains in the backdrop with complete clarity.
This trek is also doable in the summer months from June to August and winter months from December to February. However, in winter temperature drops significantly and accommodations are not prepared for such cold. In summer, the valley is covered in clouds losing the charm of its beautiful views and scenery.
Elevation and distance
Nestled between mountains, the Langtang Valley is elevated at 3400 m above sea level. It lies at a distance of about 61.8 km from the capital and you need about a week to complete this trek combining a day’s drive to Syabrubensi.
The highest elevation you will reach at this trek is of 3700 m at Kyanjing Gompa. The next day, if you are not too exhausted, you can hike up to Kyanjing Ri situated at an altitude of 4700m above sea level. Consisting of six days of the actual hike, you will cover approximately 6 to 7 km each day with a 4 to 5-hour hike daily.
Maximum/Minimum walk per day
Unlike other high-altitude treks in Nepal, the Langtang Valley trek will not you to walk for long hours. You will begin the first day of your expedition with a 6 to 7-hour drive to Syabrubensi. From here, your hike begins exactly taking you six days of the trek.
Each day, you will walk for around 4 to 5 hours after breakfast in the morning. You will walk a minimum of 3 hours on the 6th day of the trek when you traverse to Kyanjing Gompa from Langtang village. The next day is set for acclimatization in the Gompa when you have the option to rest or walk to Kyanjing Ri taking about 3 hours approximately.
You will walk a maximum of 5 to 6 hours when you return back to the Lama Hotel from Kyanjing Gompa. Since our bodies will be well acclimatized so instead of 2 days, we will trek back to Lama Hotel in one day thus taking us longer than other days of the trek.
Difficulty
Langtang Valley trek is a moderately difficult trek needing you to hike for 6 days through the Valley. You will pass numerous thick forests of pine, fir, and rhododendrons, cross numerous streams and rivers, and suspension or cable bridges. You will then arrive at Kyanjing Gompa which stands out as the highest altitude of the entire trek taking you to above 3500 m above sea level.
Therefore, basic physical fitness with strong endurance and the ability to walk for at least 5 hours a day is a must. However, it is also considered one of the easiest and shortest high-altitude treks close to Kathmandu. Since you will be at 3700 m maximum, this trek is suitable for all age groups from young children to senior citizens.
Preparation and training
Adequate physical fitness, strong leg muscles, and endurance are all we need to fulfill this trek. Therefore, we recommend you get involved in walking, running, climbing, swimming, and cycling for at least a month before joining this trek. A high altitude trekking before this trek is also suitable so you can go on a simple hiking trip to nearby mountains of your country.
We also suggest you practice yoga or meditation for mental strength that will help you stay calm in any discomforting situation. You should also be prepared to forego the comfort and luxury for a few days and adapt to a basic accommodation setting.
Alternate routes
If you want to do something different from the itinerary we have planned, it is more than possible. An alternative is the 4 to 8 days of trek to the sacred Gosakunda Lake from Thulo Syabru, Syabrubensi, or Dunche.
You can also embark on a 5 to 6-day Tamang Heritage trek which is a more cultural option taking you into the Tamang culture while living with its inhabitants.
The alternate option will be to undertake the 16-day-long Langtang Gosaikunda Helambu trek. Leaving Lama Hotel, you will make your way to Thulo Syabru, Sing Gompa to Gosakiunda Lake. And then a visit to Laure Binayak La Pass with a return to Kathmandu via Melamchi Gaun.
Altitude Sickness
The prospect of suffering from altitude sickness is quite low in the Langtang Valley trek but it doesn’t mean there is no risk at all. Although short and easy, you still will be trekking to an altitude of more than 3000 m above sea level. From this altitude, the air becomes thinner, with decreased oxygen levels.
So regardless of your experience, you may suffer from headaches, nausea, dizziness, and loss of appetite. You may also find it difficult to breathe and hard to sleep. In such a case, we advise you to inform our guide and walk down to a lower elevation.
Also taking paracetamol or Diamox tablets will help in recovering. Drinking water, increasing fluid intake, and avoiding smoking and alcohol can be some precautionary measures against altitude sickness.
Transportation, Meals and Drink
After arrival and trip preparation in Kathmandu, we will drive to Syabrubensi in a local sharing jeep or bus. Ending the trek, we will drive back to Kathmandu from Syabrubensi in the same mode of transportation. If you don’t want to travel by public transport, we can also arrange a private jeep for your comfort at an additional cost.
Regarding meals, a complimentary breakfast will be provided in Kathmandu and as the trek begins, three meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) will be provided. Enjoy your meal with a hot cup of masala tea, butter tea ginger tea, or coffee. We will also provide fresh local or seasonal fruit in the evening after dinner.
Dal vat tarkari will be readily available in any lodge. You should also go for Thakali food and momo with the option of Dhindo, Gundruk, Sel Roti, and freshly produced Yak or goat cheese.
Communication, Gadgets charging, and Internet/wifi
Uninterrupted communication, 24-hour electricity, and good speed WIFI or internet are available throughout the route to Langtang Valley. Being closer to the Kathmandu Valley, the valley has a good reception for mobile coverage. You can use both NTC and NCELL SIM for communication. For the Internet, you can use the same SIMS to activate the right data package for you.
Regarding charging your electrical devices such as mobile, camera, or laptop, the lodge rooms have a continuous electrical supply and you can easily charge your devices. The lodges are also equipped with WIFI services for which you may have to pay extra cost.
Permits
To carry out the Langtang Valley trek, you will need a TIMS (Trekkers’ Information Management System) permit so that in case of emergency it will be possible to locate you in the country. You can process it at the tourist office in Kathmandu or in Pokhara at NPR 2000 per person.
Additionally, you will have to pay the Langtang National Park fees. You can do it at the same tourist office until 2:00 p.m. or else you will have to pay them at the entrance to the park (Dhunche or Syabrubensi). The price is NPR 3000 per person.
Visa Information
For our 10-day Langtang Valley trek, you can obtain a 15-day Nepal tourist visa at USD 30 per person. However, we strongly suggest you obtain a 30-day Nepal Visa to spare some reserve days in case of any unforeseen events or climatic conditions. If not, we can also extend your VISA a few days before its expiration for a minimum of 15 days at USD 45 and USD 3 per day for additional days.
Your Extra expenses
Our package has supported almost all your expenses excluding the cost of alcoholic beverages, personal expenses, tips for guides and porters, charges for WIFI, hot shower, WIFI, laundry, trekking equipment, lunch, and dinner in Kathmandu. You can carry NPR 25 thousand to NPR 30 thousand in cash to cover these extra expenses.
Trip Extension
After completing Langtang, you can extend your stay in Nepal by participating in some other exciting treks. Please visit our website and go through the different trips we have listed.
Since Langtang is so close to Kathmandu, we recommend you stay for a few extra days in Kathmandu and take its private tour. We can organize this tour with a private car, driver, and tour guide for you.
You can also take a few days’ tour of Pokhara- a city known as heaven for tourists. Here you can go for bungee jumping, paragliding, zip flying, boat riding, and so on. A jungle safari in Chitwan National Park can be another exciting option for you.
