Difficulty of Upper Mustang
The Upper Mustang trek is a challenging and adventurous journey, especially due to its high-altitude terrain and remote locations. The trek begins with a flight from Pokhara to Jomsom , at an altitude of 2,700m and progresses through the villages like Kagbeni, chele, and Ghiling climbing higher each day. As the altitude increases, trekkers can experience the symptoms of altitude sickness making the acclimatization crucial.
The route includes several long days of trekking such as the 6-7 hrs stretches from Ghiling to Ghami and from Lo-Manthang to Yara. The trek also takes you through the rugged landscapes, dusty trails and the strong winds which can add the features to the difficulty. However, the stunning views, rich culture and unique Tibetan-style villages make the effort worthwhile. Rest and exploration days, especially in Lo-Manthang are essential for recovery and adapting to the altitude. Overall, it is a physically demanding trek suited for those with prior trekking experience.
Permits Requirements
Upper Mustang is a restricted area, so special permits are required to trek there. These permits include.
Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) :
This permit is mandatory for all the trekkers who enter the Annapurna region, which includes the Upper Mustang Trek. The Annapurna Conservation Area is Nepal’s largest protected area, home to diverse ecosystems and wildlife. The fee for the ACAP varies depending on your nationality and the duration for your stay. For most of the trekkers, it costs around USD 25 for foreigners , and there may be additional fees for entering sub-area within the conservation area.
Upper Mustang Restricted Area Permit :
The Upper Mustang region is considered as the “ restricted area” and requires a separate special permit for the access. This area is regulated by the Nepal government to protect its nature, its unique Tibetan culture and the environment. The Upper Mustang Restricted is quite expensive then other permits; it takes around USD 85-100 per person for a 10 day trek with an additional charge for every day spent in the area. The fee also varies on the time of year, as higher charges are applied during the peak season (spring and autumn). The permit is valid for a specific number of days and it must be arranged in advance . You cannot obtain the permit independently.

Cultural and Historical Significance.
The cultural and historical significance of Upper Mustang is one of the reasons to trek there. This remote region, often referred to as the “ Last forbidden kingdom” , is a distinct Tibetan culture that has been preserved for centuries. Upper Mustang was once part of the kingdom of Lo, which existed as an independent entity until the 18th century and its influence can still be seen today in the region’s architecture, language and the religious practices.
Tibetan Influence and History
Upper Mustang has strong ties to Tibet , as the region shares linguistic , religious and ethnic connections with the Tibetan people. The local people of the Mustang are ethnically tibetan and follow the Tibetan Buddhism tradition, which deeply influences their way of life. The region’s isolation from the outside world has allowed its traditional culture to remain largely unchanged over time. The area is a treasure trove of Buddhist history with sacred sites , monasteries and the ancient religious practices that date back centuries .
Lo-Manthang : The Walled City
Lo-Manthang , the capital of the Upper Mustang region is one of the most important hubs of the area. The ancient walled city was built from the mud-brick and stone which is well preserved till this date. It is the home to several significant Buddhost monasteries and the palaces. The walled city itself served as the political and cultural center of the kingdom of Lo and many of its original structures still remain to this day.
The king’s palace in Lo-Manthang is a historical landmark where you can get the glimpse of the royal history of the region. It stands as a symbol of the Mustangg’s past and its interiors are decorated with the painting that depict the Biddhist deities and the historical events.
Monasteries and Spiritual Sites
The Upper Mustang region is dotted with the several important Buddhist monasteries that are both spiritually significant and architecturally remarkable. Among the most notable are the Tashi Lhakhang Monastery and Ghar Gompa. These monasteries are not just places of worship but also serves as the centers of learning and cultural preservation for the local people. Many if them house ancient murals , scriptures and statues that reflect the regions deep religious heritage
In addition to the monasteries , sacred caves are scattered throughout the region. Some of these caves have been used for meditation for hundreds of years. One of the most famous is the Charang Cave, which holds the both important of the religions and the historical.

The ancient structures , sacred caves, and undisturbed landscapes give a sense that this place has remained largely unchanged for centuries . The people of the Upper Mustang maintain a deep connection to their land and the tradition and the visitors are often struck by the spiritual aura that surrounds the region.
Altitude and Acclimatization
The Upper Mustang Trek involves significant altitude changes with the highest point reaching around 4,200m(13,780ft). As you trek through the stunning landscapes, the air gets thinner and there will be the chance for the risk of altitude sickness to increase. Inorder to ensure a safe and enjoyable journey proper acclimatization is essential .
Throughout the trek you’ll gradually gain altitude with the key stops at villages like Kagbeni(2,800m), Ghiling(3,830m) and Lo-Manthang (3,800m) . These resting points helps you adjust to the changing elevation.Take in slowly, mainly stay hydrated as water is the best medicine for all the altitude related issues. Always listen to your body and if you feel any symptoms like headache or dizziness, it’s crucial to inform your condition to your guide and take a day’s rest.

March to May ( Spring)
Spring is one of the most popular times for trekking in Upper Mustang. The weather starts to warm up , but the nights remain cool, especially in the higher altitudes. You’ll experience clear skies and the beautiful views of the surrounding mountains making it an ideal for exploration as well as photography. The spring season brings the forest into life , with so many wildflowers blooming in the lower elevation. However , temperature can still droop in the upper region.
June to August( Monsoon)
Upper Mustang Trek in Monsoon season is possible however we don’t recommend you doing it . While the region is technically a rain shadow area and doesn’t receive as much rain as the other parts of Nepal , still the trekking trails can be slippery and muddy due to the occasional showers. The clouds can obscure the mountain view and some areas can be inaccessible .
September to November ( Autumn)
Autumn is another peak trekking season for Upper Mustang . The weather is generally stable with sunny days and the crisp nights making it perfect for outdoor activities. The stunning views of the snow-capped peaks and the landscapes are in the best condition and the air is also clear. Trekking in the Winter season in Upper mustang is also possible however due to the cold temperature you need to be prepared for all the cold which this season might bring . Especially as you reach the higher part of the trek it gets colder and the temperature also drops below freezing and sometimes snowfall can also block the trails. If you trek in this season then make sure you are well prepared and pack the gears smartly .
