Trip Information
A Day on the Ride: Nagarkot and Balthali
The morning dawns with a crisp mountain breeze and an awe-inspiring sunrise over the Himalayas. Soon, while sipping hot Nepali tea, we look outside to see how the golden rays of the sun unfold the green hills and distant snow-laden peaks. After a spirited breakfast, we geared up for the bikes, winding down the roads and moving through the countryside. The first stretch was an easy ride with breathtaking panoramic views over well-paved roads. Soon we would take a right turn and hit a dusty, dirt trail, where the real adventure would unravel.
Exhilarating was the ride through forested paths, steering clear of some cattle, passing the few picturesque villages where the locals waved curiously. Stopping at a small teahouse to stretch and enjoy a glass of refreshing masala tea made everything worth it. The road grew steeper and extra twisty, granting us wide-open views of terraced fields to the horizon.
At midday, we make it to the lovely village of Balthali-a little gem hidden away from the busy city. The afternoon was spent trekking over wooden bridges across clear streams, immersing ourselves in local culture. When the sun sank low, we settled into a snug lodge, reliving the adventures of the day over a warm meal before drifting off to sleep, lulled by the sounds of nature.
Condition of the Roads
The routes of the tour are a blend of paved highways and rough off-road rugged trails. Within the city, expect crowded roads with a lot of traffic. As you move to the outskirts, however, the roads are much smoother but feature sharp bends and steep inclines. Most sections include gravel and dirt trails, especially close to Namobuddha, Balthali, and Lankuri Bhanjyang, and thus will require some careful navigation. Ride-hoppers should be ready to meet with different conditions, smooth asphalt to bump-off road tracks. One may enjoy the beautiful hill roads but probably will have to cross some potholes and rough grounds.
