Overview of Namo Buddha Hike – 1 day hike

Looking for a day hike with family, and friends for refreshments? Then join us for a short day trip to Namo Buddha Hike, in Kavre District southeast of the Valley, one of the 3 most significant stupas, just 40km away from Kathmandu city. Namo Buddha hike is one of the shortest and best hiking spots for a day near Kathmandu valley.

“Namo Buddha” is a sacred site, the name translates to “Homage to the Buddha.According to the Buddhists, it is believed that in one of the lives of Lord Buddha, was born a prince named Mahasattva. One day, while he was wandering around the forest with his 2 brothers, he encountered a hungry tigress and her cubs, seeing them in desperate need of food, the price selflessly offered his own body to the tigress as food, and this act of supreme self-sacrifice is considered a powerful symbol of compassion and selflessness in Buddhism. A stupa marks the spot where this legendary event is said to be placed.

A day to Namo Buddha Hike begins after the hearty breakfast; we drive towards eastern Kathmandu valley to Dhulikhel and end at Panauti. After reaching Dhulikhel, the trails go through the villages and terraced fields. As you ascend higher and if the day is clear then we can see some of the Himalayan peaks including Langtang Lirung(7,227m), Ganesh Himal ranges, and Dorje Lakpa (6,966m). Along the way, the air becomes cleaner than Kathmandu and there are opportunities to interact with the very friendly locals.

As the trails pass we will reach the Namo Buddha stupa which is located at the top of the hill at an altitude of 1,750 m with 360-degree views of the valley so, the place is popular with both locals and foreigners. Upon reaching the Thrangu Yashi Yangtse Monastery, we are greeted by the soothing chants of monks and the aroma of incense through the air. The Thrangu Yashi Yangtse Monastery is also known as Namo Buddha Monastery is a Tibetan Buddhist monastery which was established in the beginning of 20th century.

Namo Buddha Hike
Beautiful valley seen during Namo Buddha hiking.

After visiting the monastery and stupas nearby, the journey continues towards Panauti. At first, we descend for about 30 min through the jungle and follow the trail to Panauti for about 2 hrs.  On the way to Panauti from Namo Buddha we will encounter beautiful rice paddies and some other agriculture farms. Also, we will have a chance to interact with friendly local people during our hike. During the summer and beginning of the fall season this place looks very nice like lush green in the summer and golden color when the rice is ready to harvest in the fall season.

Myth:

Many people around the valley believe that 6000 years ago Ngingdui Tshenpo who was prince of the royal family discovered a starving tigress and her five cubs. To save the lives of the tigers, the prince (also known as Mahasatwo) sacrificed his body so that the warm blood drew the tigress to him. The tigress ate the prince’s body and left only his bones. The bones of the prince were brought back to the village and buried in a tomb which became the stupa of Namo Buddha.

Around 3500 years later, Gutam Buddha came to the village and he conducted three tours around the stupa before he declared that he was the reincarnation of Prince Mahasatwo. Gaumtam Buddha renamed this village to Namo Buddha meaning homage to Buddha.
