What to expect?

The Everest Base Camp Trek with Island peak climbing is a perfect mix of trekking and climbing opportunities in Nepal. It allows you to contemplate Mount Everest with your own eyes, and experience the frenzy of setting foot at the base camp of Everest from where the journey for daring climbers begins. In addition, you will climb the 6000 m high Island Peak which allows you to boast about your expedition in days coming.

But first, you will have a taste of Asian life with the blend of Western culture in Kathmandu. Then you will have 30 minutes of thrilling adventure to Lukla. You will walk through the dense and deep forests of pine, fir, and rhododendron and reach different villages of Namche, Tengbcohe, and Dingboche.

From here on, you will walk through the arid mountainous thin vegetation to the Everest Base Camp. Here you will spend time with many daring adventurers and witness their preparation. From Kala Patthar, you will have broad views of Everest, Pumori, Nuptse, Taboche, Cholatse, and Ama Dablam.

For 6 to 7 hours, you will ascend with the aid of an ice axe, rope, and crampon and reach the top of the peak. You can now admire Lhotse, Makalu, Baruntse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam, Lobuche and Everest.

Congratulating one another, you will now end your journey traveling through the familiar path through Namche and Lukla.

Best Time

The ideal time for Everest Base Camp Trek with Island peak climbing is in the spring (March to May) or fall (mid-September to October). these periods present the perfect weather conditions for carrying out climbing and trekking expeditions. Although the trek route up to the Everest Base Camp will be crowded, once you reach the Island Base Camp, you will see the number of people decrease significantly.

Winter climbing and trekking is also possible but we recommend it to experienced climbers and trekkers only. Temperatures will be very low and weather conditions will be difficult. They can drop as low as -25/-30°C, and winds can reach up to 96 km/h.

Elevation and distance

This amazing trip consists of two parts: first we will trek to the Everest Base Camp which lies about 200 to 300 km away from the capital of Nepal. Nestled in the Khumbu region at the height of 5361 m, we will be at the base camp on the 10th day of the trek.

The Island Peak and Kathmandu are situated apart at a distance of 160 km. While the distance between Lukla and Island Peak is only around 33.6 km. We will be climbing the peak on the 14th day of our expedition.

We will be completing this journey in 19 days with 15 days of actual hikes. Each day on average, we will be covering around 15 km by foot.

Maximum/Minimum walk per day

Our expert team has designed this program intending to facilitate all types of travelers: beginner to experienced so they can easily fulfill their dream of conquering the high Himalayas. We have set the overnight destination such that you will have to walk only for 5 to 7 hours on average.

However, some days may require you to walk for long hours. Such as on the 14th day, when trekking and climbing the Island Peak from the base camp, it will take 9 to 10 hours of walking period which is the maximum for our trip.

Whereas, on the 12th day, you will walk only for two hours to reach Chhukung from Dingbcohe which is the minimum walk of our entire trip.

Difficulty and Acclimatization

The Everest Base Camp Trek with Island peak climbing is classified as a beginner’s trip although it is not an easy trip. The difficulty level is moderate with no requirement of complete mountaineering and technical skills.

If you are in good physical and mental condition, you will be able to deal with the high altitude, remoteness, and wilderness easily. You will have two acclimatization days at Namche and Dingboche, and then you will progress gradually on days 12 and 13 before climbing the peak.

It will provide you ample opportunity to adapt to the high altitude. However, we advise you to prepare yourself with physical and endurance training to cope with the strenuous climb.

Can a beginner join this trek?

Yes, you can join this trip even if you are a beginner, or new to mountain climbing and high altitude trekking. But you should possess more than average physical and mental fitness along with good health.

Alternate routes

The trait of the Everest Base Camp Trek with Island peak climbing is the accessibility of alternate routes. You can combine several other treks and expeditions along with this trip.

Such as, instead of climbing Island Peak, you can climb another six thousand-meter-high peak known as Lobuche Peak. Standing tall at 6,119 m above sea level, it is easier to climb than Island Peak.

Or, if you can spare 3 more days, you can trek to Lake Gokyo along with Everest Base Camp and climb Island Peak at the same time.

Altitude Sickness

On this trip, you will be spending most of your days and nights 3000 m above sea level. Therefore, your breathing may become difficult, you may have headaches, and you may lose appetite and sleep. All these are the mild symptoms of acute mountain sickness aka altitude sickness. With proper acclimatization, good hydration, and sufficient nutrition, you will be able to cope with the altitude.

Please inform our guide if you go through these symptoms. He is well-trained to spot altitude sickness and take necessary actions. You can also go down for quick relief and take Diamox or paracetamol to recover from headaches.

We provide airport pick-up and drop-off services along with all the ground transportation during the trip. Kathmandu – Lukla and return Kathmandu air ticket is also included in our tour package.

Communication, Gadgets charging, and Internet/wifi

Communication during this expedition is possible through the NTC or NCELL networks. You can purchase these SIMS in Kathmandu or Namche Bazaar.

We will stay in the lodge or tea house during the trek period. These lodges provide WIFI and gadget charging facilities at an extra cost. However, the consistency of the WIFI may not be reliable depending on the altitude and number of people using the internet.

As an alternate approach, you can also use the data package made available by the NTC and NCELL networks for uninterrupted internet usage.

At the base camp, however, these amenities may not be at your disposal. We advise you to charge your power bank in the lodge so you can use it in the camp.

Permits

Three types of permits are needed for carrying out this trip: Sagarmatha National Park permit, Khumbu Pasang Lamu municipality permit, and climbing permit for the Island peak climbing.

We will obtain these permits as your legal trekking and tour agency in Kathmandu. USD 30 per person for the Sagarmatha National Park permit, USD 20 for each person for a Khumbu Pasang Lamu municipality permit, and USD 70 to USD 250 per person for a climbing permit needed for their issuance.

Everest Base Camp Trek With Island Peak Climbing FAQ'S

Q

Can I skip the Everest Base Camp trek and only do the Island Peak Climbing?

Yes, from Dingboche we can directly trek to Chhukung village and head to the Island peak base camp skipping hiking to the Everest Base camp and Kala Patthar.

Q

Which one is harder- climbing Island Peak or Lobuche Peak?

There are two approaches to Lobuche Peak: Lobuche East and Lobuche West. Commonly, the climbing part is accessible in Lobuche East which is 6199m tall. Although less in altitude than Island Peak, the approach to the Lobuche Peak is harder than the Island Peak. The ascension to the Lobuche summit needs more technical skill over the steep trail.

Q

Can you withdraw money on this trip?

If you are lucky, you may find working ATMs in Namche but don’t rely on it because most of the time, cash quickly runs out. So bring your money from Kathmandu. You can expect USD 20 to USD 30 per day for your personal expenses.

Q

What is the age limit for climbing the Island Peak?

You should be 17 years old to climb any trekking peak in Nepal.

Q

Why is Island Peak so famous?

For many reasons: for the incredible mountain views, for its simplicity and easiness, and for acclimatization to climb other higher mountains in the future.
