Upper Dolpo Trek is a high-altitude region in the upper part of the Dolpa District of western Nepal. It is bordering Tibet and thus has a similar culture to Tibetan. Part of the area lies in Shey Phoksundo National Park. The scattered, agro-pastoral population, known as Dolpo in standard Tibetan in the local dialect, is connected to the rest of Nepal via Jufal airport. The upper Dolpo reflects Tibetan culture. Dolpo are generally adherents of Bon, a religion originating from predate Buddhism but whose modern form is officially accepted as a fifth school of Tibetan Buddhism. The remote region has preserved its Tibetan culture in relatively pure form, making it attractive to Westerners. Dolpa was the location for the 1999 Oscar-nominated film Himalaya and more recently for the German documentary Dolpo Tulku. The abundance of Himalayan wildlife includes rare Snow Leopard, Musk Deer, Himalayan Blue Sheep makes it an Eco-trek destination as well.
Upper Dolpo features high mountain passes, deep valley and the iconic Shey Phoksundo Lake, the deepest lake in Nepal.Trekking in Upper Dolpo is a challenging journey which requires the special permits and involves high-altitude trekking route .The region is home to different wildlife like snow-leopard,blue sheep,Himalayan Tahr and different species of birds. The region’s altitude ranges from approximately 2,500m(8,202ft)to over 5,000m(16,404 ft). While you are on the trek on dolpo area you will witness the different ancient monasteries including Shey Gompa, which dates back to the 11th century and many more.
