The Kailash Yatra by Overland Drive In and Flight Out offers a unique opportunity to experience the sacred Mount Kailash , deeply revered by Hindus , Buddhists, Jains and Bon followers. This carefully planned pilgrimage begins with a scenic overland drive through the stunning landscapes of Nepal and Tibet , showcasing the majestic Himalayas, remote valley and serene high-altitude deserts.
Do the legends of Kailash tell the truth? Do those who have completed the kora really shed the karmic burden of the past, and those who have crossed the Dolma La pass begin life with a clean slate? If you really want the answer to these questions, then you must join our Kailash Yatra by Overland Drive in and Flight out tour so you can yourself feel and experience the secretive aura of the Kailash.
For several years now, our agency has been organizing this tour perfect for those seeking spiritual perfection. As part of our Kailash yatra drive in via Kerung border and flight out from the Lhasa route, we offer you to go along the 53 km path of the outer kora that within four days will take you around Kailash with the exclusive darshana (visual) of Kailash’s north face.
Mount Kailash (alt. 6638 m) is a sacred and mysterious mountain peak that stands alone in the Ngari county of western Tibet,China. Bons, Hindus, Jains, and Buddhists consider this unusual mountain to be the heart and nerve of the Universe.
For the Hindu devotees, its upper part is the pious home of Shiva- the destroyer of the evil sins and karmas, the god of all the deities. According to the Vishnu Purana, the peak is a representation or image of Mount Meru, the cosmic mountain at the center of the Universe.
It is actually a pyramid the edges of which are oriented along the 4 geographical orientations. These four edges of Kailash are regarded as the four sides/faces of Shiva made from Lapis lazuli, gold, crystal, and ruby.
Lake Mansarovar at the foot of the Kailash is believed to be the lake of Brahma, the creator of the universe, as well as the lake of Shakti, the female deity, the wife of Shiva.
On the other hand, for Buddhists, it is the habitat of Buddha and for Bons, it is the nine-storied swastika mountain. No matter the religion, the pilgrims have been coming here for hundreds of years to circle the mountain and the lake known as Kora Parikrama or Yatra.
Kailash Yatra by Overland Drive in and Flight out we are also proposing to take you on Kora where you will experience the entire cycle from birth to death to rebirth.
The journey initiates with a long day road travel from Kathmandu to Nepal Tibet border at Timure. Then, you move to Kailash through Kerung and Saga. After spending a night at Lake Mansarovar, you will begin walking from Darchen till you cross the 5600 m Dolma La Pass to reach Zhuthulpuk. You will leave the past behind and get the chance to change the future destiny.
In our Kailash yatra drive in and flight out from Lhasa program, you will also get acquainted with Lhasa- Tibet’s capital as you make your way through Gyantse and Shigatse.
Spending one day at Lhasa, you will get to see Potala Palace, the grand monument looking out the entire Lhasa and its inhabitants. The former quarter of the Dalai Lamas, it boasts the throne, chambers, tombs, and meditative caves of these saints.
You will also get the chance to see the full-scale sculpture of Shakyamuni in the Jokhang Temple and take another kora along Barkhor Street around the temple. The Kailash Yatra drive in and flight out from Lhasa finally ends as you return to Kathmandu.
For Westerners and skeptics on the other hand, the tour represents some unique enchanting beauty of the Tibetan landscape and the trekking opportunity through some of the harshest highlands that will prepare them before any trip to the highlands.
Recommended in the dry time frame of May to early October, the Kailash yatra drive in and flight out from Lhasa tour is one of the challenging tours in Tibet. But the tour is a combination of the four-wheel trip with an option of hiring the yak or horses for the Kora.

Day 9 Drive to Yamadwar (4,740 m) and trek to Dirapuk (4,950 m), 5 to 6 hours, 12 km.
Our three-day walk of spiritual awakening begins from today. A short 30-minute drive will take us to Yamadwar recognized as Tarboche by Tibetans. Every year, during the annual celebration of Saga Dawa, the flagpole is honored here.
After crossing the gate, you will only have the option to walk or ride on yak or horses. If their services are hired, they will meet you at the Gate.
You can see the vast ocean of Lungtas hanging as you pass by the unique Sky cemetery site of the Tibetans. We are now in the Lhachu Valley where we will walk beside the Lhachu river until we are at the humble guesthouse of the Dirapuk right next to the north face of Kailash.
During our today’s journey, we will also pass by several shops, hotspots, and shelters. If you like, you can therefore purchase bottled water, energy drinks, and enjoy hot soups and various food options in between the trek.
Also, if weather is on our side, you may also have darshana of Mahadeva from the north side upon reaching the guesthouse. You may also take a moment for a small prayer and puja for a closer darshan of Mahadeva.
Please remember that from today till the completion of the Kailash Parikrama, accommodations will be shared among 4 to 5 yatris in the dormitory styled guesthouse run by the monastery. There are no other lodges or hotels available from here onwards.

Day 10 Acclimatization day at Dirapuk (4,950 m)
Today, we will undertake the Inner Kora of Kailash, which, although shorter in distance, is more challenging due to the steep climbs and descents over glacial and icy landscapes.
According to the pilgrims, taking the inner kora means profound purification of the soul. Our short walk will follow the northern wall/face of Kailash which will end at Charan Sparsha where we may be able to touch the peak’s north face thereby physically connecting with its holiness.
Because of the arduous nature, we request all our members to be mentally and physically prepared for this inner parikrama.
If you find it difficult to continue past Charan Sparsha, you can still appreciate the breathtaking view of Kailash from a close vantage point.
After this remarkable experience, you will return to Dirpuk Monastery via the same path.

Day 11 Trek to Zuthulpuk (4,790 m) via Dolma la pass (5,600 m), 22km, 11-12 hours (7 km to top 4km down to other side of basecamp and 11km flat to Zuthulpuk)
Today, we have the longest and hardest journey ahead. After we leave the Lhachu Valley, we will traverse the challenging rugged terrain of Dorma Chu Valley.
Our climb will lead us to Jarok Donkhang, where we will arrive at the Shiva Tsal burial ground, located at 5,330 meters. Following the ritual, we will also leave behind our old possessions (hair, blood, clothes, nails, etc).
This act indicates our willingness to leave behind the past and start a new one with completely blank pages to write the new chapters. We will now ascend vertically to the Dolma La Pass, a sacred site dedicated to Goddess Tara, or Gauri.
We will make our descent from the top of Dolma La Pass to the other side of base camp in approximately two hours, covering a distance of 4 kilometers, primarily downhill.
After a brief rest and lunch, we will resume our trek to Zuthulpuk, which will take an additional 3 to 4 hours to complete the remaining 11 kilometers.
This section is mostly flat, traversing grassy terrain, and we will encounter several suspension bridges, shops, and a variety of wildlife, including Himalayan yaks, sheep, and horses till we reach the monastery guesthouse for the night.

Day 13 Drive to Shigatse (3,845 m), 8 to 9 hours
There are two routes from Saga- one that goes to Kathmandu via Kerung and the other that goes to Shigatse. Since our travel plan includes a flight from Lhasa to Kathmandu, we will be continuing on the road that leads us to Shigatse- the second largest city of Tibet.
If you don’t want to fly, then, we can take the other route that goes through Kerung, the same way we started our journey.
The route to Shigatse goes down along the Yarlung Tsampo. Eventually, we will find the excellent Friendship Highway and its exceptional panoramas until we reach Shigatse for the night.
The city showcases several historical monasteries and vibrant Buddhist culture, all set within its picturesque urban landscape. This journey will also provide excellent panorama of Mount Everest, Cho Oyu, and various peaks of the Himalayan range on both the Tibetan and Nepalese sides.

After leaving Shigatse, our four-wheel will climb to the 5010 m Karo La Pass. After we descend from this Pass, we will quickly find ourselves at Yamdrok Tso Lake. We are just 100 km afar from Lhasa.
The Yamdrok Tso Lake often locally known as the Yamdrok Yumtso is one of the four holy lakes of Tibet along with Mansarovar and Nam Tso. At 4440 m, this lake’s history is tied with Padmasambhava, father of Buddhism in Tibet.
We can see numerous travelers and pilgrims walking along its shores and visiting the old fortress called Pede Dzong.
Moving onward, Gyantse will be in between where we will take a lunch break. Resuming our drive, we will now drive alongside the picturesque Yamdrok Lake for several hours.
The 4794 m Khamba La Pass stands on our way before we reach Lhasa- a capital of strange yet alluring architecture and tradition.

Trip Information
Weather and Best Time for Kailash Yatra by Overland /Drive in via Kerung and Flight out From Lhasa
The weather in Tibet is persistently windy and the air has low humidity for most of the year. The warmest months are between May through September where daytime heat can reach up to 25 to 30 degrees Celsius.
The nighttime heat can plummet to minus 10 to 5 degrees. There may be light cloud cover resulting in sudden light rain. The winter months from December through February bring the day heat up to 0 degrees Celsius with night temperature dropping to minus 15 degrees.
Therefore, considering the weather pattern, the stable weather between May to the beginning of October represents the best time for our Kailash Yatra by Overland /Drive in via Kerung and Flight out From Lhasa tour. In addition, the kora on the day of the full moon of these months is considered an ideal period for getting rid of bad habits, solitude, self-analysis, and evaluation of past actions, or making plans for the future.
Kailash Yatra Difficulty level
To tell you the truth, the Kailash Yatra by Overland /Drive in via Kerung and Flight out From Lhasa tour is difficult. The distances are long, and the altitudes are on average 4500 m above sea level, with the highest being 5600 m at Dolma La. The roads at the Kailash are not that much in good condition making the four-wheel travel quite strenuous.
On the other hand, the living conditions in Kailash can be tough at least for those not used to it. Mountain shelters without hot water, cold close to ice temperatures, and limited food options can add to the challenge. However, each participant in the past has overcome everything with honor.
Kailash Yatra altitude Sickness and Acclimatization
In our Kailash Yatra by Overland /Drive in via Kerung and Flight out From Lhasa tour, you will immediately find yourself at 4000 m altitude and rise to 5600 m at the Dolma La. No doubt, there is oxygen deficiency in its air which causes altitude sickness.
Many often have headaches while some may vomit, and find it difficult to breathe normally. To cope with this sickness, we have therefore planned a gradual walk, and rise in elevation with a day off at Dirapuk before our march to the Pass.
Near Kailash, there are oxygen chambers, and our team is also equipped with portable oxygen cylinders. However, most of our participants have not needed oxygen administration, as they have coped very well. We advise you to take Diamox before entering Tibet to speed up the acclimatization process.
Who can take on this trip ?
Only participants from 10 to 75 years can join our Kailash Yatra by Overland /Drive in via Kerung and Flight out From Lhasa tour. Also, China won’t allow people over 75 years of age to enter Tibet because of its harsh conditions.
As for the tour, if your physical condition is optimal, then no experience is required for this travel as every road travel will take place in a private vehicle and the Kora can be undertaken on horse or yak back.
However, if you are someone with high blood pressure, kidney and lung conditions, or obesity, then you should think twice before engaging in this trip.
During the Kailash Yatra Accommodation, Food and Drink
In Timure, accommodations will be in typical mountain lodges with double beds for your overnight stay. On the Tibetan side, our Tibetan guide will ensure that you have a comfortable tourist hotel each night.
In Kerung, Saga, Shigatse, and Lhasa, the hotels will provide modern conveniences. However, during the Mount Kailash parikrama, in between the places such as Lake Mansarovar, Darchen and Zhutulpuk, you will stay in monastic hostel-style guesthouses, sharing rooms with 3 to 5 people.
There will be no hot water available, and the toilets will be shared outside. If the monastery guesthouses are fully accommodated, tents will be installed on the premises of the monastery for your overnight lodging. However, we will be reserving the lodging in advance so our clients will get room in such difficult places as well.
Throughout the Kailash yatra drive in and flight out from Lhasa tour, we provide vegetarian options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner along with hot drinks and fresh fruits.
In Nepal, Kerung, Saga, Shigatse, and Lhasa, you can expect a variety of food choices. However, during the Kailash Kora/Parikrama, the meals will be more basic and repetitive, primarily consisting of noodles and soup, Tibetan flatbreads, and tea.
Transportation, Communication, and Internet Facilities
All travel arrangements during our Kailash Yatra by Overland /Drive in via Kerung and Flight out From Lhasa tour will be made in a comfortable and spacious private vehicle (Car, Bus Jeep as per group size) on both the Nepal and Tibet sides, including airport transfers in both areas. We will also organize your flight from Lhasa to Kathmandu.
For communication on Nepal side, you can purchase local NTC and Ncell SIM cards near Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) or at various locations throughout Kathmandu.
You also have the option of using a virtual eSIM, which can be activated by scanning a QR code. Both physical and virtual SIM cards provide 4G mobile internet service.
In Tibet, local SIM cards from China Unicom, China Telecom, or China Mobile are available, which offer 5G coverage, even in the Kailash area.
WiFi is generally available during your stay in Nepal, as well as in Kerung, Saga, Shigatse, and Lhasa. However, it may not be accessible during parikrama in Kailash, but you can remain connected through mobile internet.
Rules and Regulations for the Kailash Yatra (Tour)
If you wish to join our Kailash Yatra by Overland /Drive in via Kerung and Flight out From Lhasa tour, you have to follow these essential rules and guidelines:
- You are required to join only an organized group tour.
- The tour must be organized by an authorized travel agency in Nepal and Tibet.
- Tour reservations must be made at least one month in advance.
- A colored scan of your passport, along with a 51 mm by 51 mm passport-sized photo, must be submitted.
- The photo should have a white background, and you should not wear any makeup or glasses.
- The scanned copy of your passport should be complete, with no tears or cut edges.
Once the itinerary is confirmed, it cannot be modified.
Visa and Permits for Kailash Yatra 2025 and 2026
Our Kailash yatra drive in from Kerung and flight out from Lhasa tour will commence from Nepal, therefore, a Chinese Group Visa and a Tibet Permit are mandatory.
Tibet Travel Permit/TTP
This TTP permits you to travel freely throughout Tibet. This permit, granted by the Tibetan Tourism Office (TTB), includes all necessary information about each participant, including the itinerary and the dates of arrival and departure.
Therefore, any changes in the travel program after the TTP application is not possible. After we have all your papers, we will forward them to our travel partner in Tibet (licensed Tibet Travel Agency), who will then submit them to the TTB.
Our Tibetan partner will then forward us the formal invitation letter which will be used to apply for your Chinese Group Visa in Kathmandu. At the Kerung, our appointed Tibetan guide will be at the Chinese Checkpost with your Tibet Travel Permit.
Chinese Group Visa
When all participants have arrived in Kathmandu, we will meet at the Chinese Embassy to apply for the Chinese group visa. This visa will be in the form of a single white paper granted for an entire group thus necessitating all participants to enter and leave Tibet together.
We will present the invitation letter, along with your original passports and photographs. Additionally, you will need to provide your fingerprints for biometric identification.
The embassy will keep your passports until the visa is processed, after which they will be returned to you.
There are two ways to apply for this visa: the standard procedure, which takes four business days and costs $175 for U.S. citizens and between $70 to $170 for citizens from other countries, and the express application (for urgent application), which takes three business days and costs between $90 to $180.
Please remember that Saturdays and Sundays are holidays and will not be counted as business days.
Rules and Restrictions for Indian Pilgrims
The Tibetan Local Public Security Bureau has recently stopped granting Aline’s travel permit to Indian Passport holders regardless of their Chinese Visa and TTP.
This action has barred the Indians from entering the Kailash region. Although the private helicopter route is accessible, but the strict rules and procedures have made this route very impractical for the Indians.
The tension at LAC (Line of Actual Control ) has been regarded as the main cause for this step of China.
