The Khumai Danda Trek is a scenic 4-day adventure in the Annapurna region, perfect for trekkers seeking a moderate challenge. One of the best-kept secrets of Nepal, Khumai Dada is a pure alpine ridge, suspended at the altitude of about 3245 meters, below the mighty Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) and under the Annapurna region. This northern corner of the Kaski district lies just about a short drive and trek from Pokhara and serves as a dream destination for those seeking raw Himalayan beauty who do not want the crowds of popular trails.
So the journey starts with some splendid driving through countryside and a moderate trek winding through dense woods of rhododendron, oak, and pine. In spring, it burns with the bright reds and pinks of thousands of blooming rhododendrons, whose sweet, earthy fragrance wafts through the air. As one climbs, the forest slowly disappears into opening ridgelines, where prayer flags flap in the breeze and the only sounds are those of birds and the rustling leaves.
Once you reach the ridge, however, the terrain changes dramatically—booming close-up, jaw-dropping sceneries of the Annapurna range. Rising sharply is the Machhapuchhre Himal or Sacred Mountain, known as ”Fishtail,” with a very sharp double summit. At its side, the peaks of Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and Lamjung Himal stretch like snow-covered amphitheaters across the horizon. The first rays of the sun color the mountains in gold and rose at sunrise, while at sunset, the colors are orange, crimson, and lavender.
Khumai Danda has a lot of things to offer apart from those views, and it has peace as well. It is indeed solitude with infrastructure in a minimal way and fewer visitors. The few homestays and teahouses along the route are very simple but welcoming as they are usually managed by warm-hearted locals who share stories and food with smiles. Here, one can also experience the best camping possible and wake up under the mighty Himalayan sky.
That makes this short trek, which generally concludes in 2 to 4 days, quite accessible, tranquil, and highly rewarding, and it can be appreciated by beginner trekkers with their families or seasoned trekkers seeking a bit of peace. Those who enjoy beautiful vistas in the mountains and photograph wildflowers will find a spiritual moment in nature at Khumai Dada, while the rest will find a memorable experience, well within reach from the lively lakeside town of Pokhara.

Trip Information
Difficulty
The Khumai Dada trek is considered an easy-to-moderate trek, making it an excellent choice for beginner trekkers, families, or anyone looking for a short and rewarding hiking experience near Pokhara. The trail features a mix of gentle ascents, forested paths, and some moderately steep sections as you approach the Khumai ridge.
With a maximum elevation of around 3,245 meters, the altitude is relatively manageable, and the risk of altitude sickness is low if trekked at a comfortable pace. Most people complete the trek in 2 to 4 days, which allows for gradual acclimatization and plenty of time to enjoy the scenic beauty along the way. No technical climbing skills are required, and the trail is well-marked through rhododendron forests and small Gurung villages. Overall, Khumai Dada offers a fulfilling Himalayan trekking experience that’s accessible even to those with limited time or trekking experience.
Accommodation
Khumai Dada trek accommodation is simple. It reflects untouched and remote nature. Most trekkers use basic teahouses or local homestays found in villages like Ghachowk and Hile Kharka. Here, one is met with warm-hearted locals and is offered traditional meals and basic lodging. Simple beds, shared toilets, and limited facilities—rooms are usually small, without hot showers or electricity in some places but may have solar lighting.
At the highest point of the trek-Khumai Dada-there are even fewer accommodation options, forcing most trekkers to camp for the night either with their equipment or as part of an organized trekking group that does the setting up and cooks. Although the facilities are basic, hospitality, a quiet environment, and beautiful natural surroundings provide a cozy and memorable experience. Because this route is still being developed, it is advisable to plan ahead or get a guide to help coordinate stays along the way.
Best Season For Khumai Danda
Khumai Danda is a stunning and less-visited trekking region in the Annapurna Mountain range. It can be trekked to throughout the year, but each season presents a different experience. The following is a seasonal breakdown:
Spring (March to May)
Spring is one of the seasons considered pleasant to trek to Khumai Dada. The weather was generally stable, with daytime temperatures ranging between 10°C and 20°C. Mostly clear skies are a welcome maturity providing excellent views of Annapurna South and Machhapuchhre (Fishtail).
The rhododendron forests are in bloom all along the trail, making it a colorful experience. This season is recommended for nature lovers, photographers, or anybody who enjoys trekking in moderate weather.
Autumn (September to November)
The entire autumn period can be considered the ideal season for Khumai Dada. The air is fresh and crystal clear following the monsoon. It is at this time that mountain views are at their sharpest and clearest. Daytime temperatures are above 12°C to 22°C, and nights are cool but relatively warm.
The trails are dry and in good condition, making for actual comfort in hiking. Plus, one could also enjoy Dashain and Tihar local festivals adding to the cultural charm of the trek.
Winter (December to February)
During winter, there are cold days with occasional snowfall at higher altitudes. The temperature may drop below freezing at night, especially near Khuma Dada. Daytime still permits trekking under the warmth of the sun but requires preparation with winter clothes.
For those who love peace on the trail with just the sound of their boots crunching on the snow and the sight of a white wonderland, winter may still be an enchanting season – provided they prepare for fierce cold and occasional trail-cutting due to snow.
Monsoon (June to August)
Monsoon isn’t an ideal season to trek to Khumai Dada, as the region receives heavy rainfall, which makes trails muddy and slippery. Due to clouds and fog, visibility can get reduced, and landslides can become common. Moreover, leeches thrive in these seasons.
Though if you know your trekking very well and don’t mind getting drenched, watching the splendor of the monsoon in a lush green landscape, with the very few company of another trekker, is something not to miss.
Permits For Khumai Danda
The Khumai Danda trek, just like any other trek in the Annapurna region, needs two principal permits; the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and the TIMS (Trekkers’ Information Management System) card. ACAP is mandated to ensure the preservation of natural and cultural heritage in the area. It costs NPR 1000 for SAARC nationals and NPR 3000 for non-SAARC nationals. It can be obtained from the Tourism Management Office either in Pokhara or Kathmandu.
The TIMS card, which comes at a price tag of NPR 1000 for SAARC nationals and NPR 2000 for other foreign nationals, is required for the registration and safety of trekkers, and you can get it from the Nepal Tourism Board offices in Kathmandu or Pokhara. If you are trekking along with a guide or porter, they would usually assist you with the arrangements for the permits, or you can request the permits through a local agency. Ensure that you register at the point of entry into the Annapurna Conservation Area-the best known being Nayapul-and carry along the permits during the course of the trek. Permit rules may change; hence, you should always check with a local trekking agency for the most up-to-date information.
