Trip Information
Manaslu Circuit vs Annapurna Circuit
The Manaslu and Annapurna circuit treks are undoubtedly among the most popular destinations in Nepal. The Manaslu circuit offers a journey around the eighth tallest mountain, Manaslu, while the Annapurna circuit encircles the tenth tallest peak, Annapurna.
Each trek presents its own unique challenges and experiences. The Manaslu circuit features a less-traveled path that displays the pristine nature with the formidable challenge of 5106 m Larkya Pass. Here, you will see the stunning spectacle of lesser-known Himalayan peaks such as Shringi, Pang Chuli, and Cheo.
On the other hand, the Annapurna circuit is renowned for its stunning and well-walked routes with the challenge of the Thorong La Pass at 5,416 meters. This trek also offers views of the sacred Fishtail Peak, affectionately known as Machhapuchre.
From the untouched wilderness of Manaslu to the popular trails of Annapurna, these two distinct regions provide contrasting yet enriching experiences in a single journey.
Length and Terrain of Manaslu circuit trek with Annapurna circuit trek
The Manaslu circuit trek with the Annapurna circuit trek composes 367 km long circuit track for exploration with 177 of Manaslu and about 190 of Annapurna.
These two regions however feature remarkably similar terrains, starting with thriving, dense forests fed by rushing rivers to the high alpine trees, scattered forests, and vast yak grasslands.
In Annapurna, the pathway leads to the raw desert area that echoes the rawness of Tibet. Our highest overnight village is Thorong Phedi, located at 4,450 meters, while the Thorong La Pass, at 5,416 meters, represents the highest elevation on this trek.
Weather and Best Travel Time for Manaslu circuit trek with Annapurna circuit trek
The Manaslu and Annapurna regions have a monsoon effected climate. The summer period is therefore very hot and humid while the winters are colder with shorter days. You will experience the tropical climate in the lower part of Manaslu and Annapurna followed by the temperate as you go higher.
Taking this factor into consideration, the most comfortable time for this trek is mid-October to mid-December when there is autumn in the air. The clearer drier air with mild heat and the best panoramic pictures of the entire landscape blessed with the astonishingly bewitching Himalayas make this time perfect for a trek.
The second favorable time will be from March to the end of May when the dried winter vegetation starts to renew and the sun shines almost the entire time over our heads – not too hot and not too cold.
We suggest you avoid the winter days from mid-December to the end of February when heavy snowfall blocks access to Thorong La and Larkya La. Also, the summer days from June to the end of September when the monsoon can often be the reason for heavy landslides.
Why is Manaslu Circuit restricted and not Annapurna?
Manaslu and Annapurna are both situated within two protected areas of Nepal, safeguarded by government regulations. However, the Annapurna region is not restricted but Manaslu is.
This is primarily because Annapurna is not as close to the Tibetan border as Manaslu. Additionally, the Annapurna circuit, which opened in 1977 earlier than Manaslu due to its openness became more accessible, resulting in the loss of its original charm.
Today, local communities are now more inclined towards tourism rather than agriculture. The Nepalese government thus aims to avoid repeating past mistakes, which is why the Manaslu circuit, established in 1991, has been restricted.
Difficulty and Challenges of Manaslu circuit trek with Annapurna circuit trek
The Manaslu circuit trek with the Annapurna circuit trek is classified as a D-level journey, indicating a high degree of medium difficulty. The challenging and isolated terrain of Manaslu presents slopes that sometimes steepen up and sometimes down along with the modest accommodation en route. This makes the first phase of our journey slightly more difficult.
In addition, you will need to overcome two high passes, with daily walking duration occasionally extending to 8 to 10 hours. Thus, we encourage our clients to first experience one trek before taking on the challenge of both in one adventure.
Who can engage in the Manaslu circuit trek with Annapurna circuit trek?
The Manaslu circuit trek with the Annapurna circuit trek has its own set of challenges. The route in the Manaslu region is not always marked, and need you to move on different types of terrain such as inaccessible sections, rocky sections with slight technical difficulties, and steep and slippery slopes.
In addition, the mountain pathways to the High Passes both in the Manaslu and Annapurna regions are often covered with pebbles, stones, and snow which demand sure footing and the ability to react swiftly in case of a slip. The climbs and descents also require a lot of leg strength and good endurance for which your physical and mental toughness must be optimum.
You should also have some sense of direction and the ability to read maps as in the mountains, mobile phone reception is very weak or non-existent. Thus this trek is intended for expert hikers who come with some experience and knowledge of the mountainous area, have a sustained pace, and have good physical preparation.
Altitude Sickness and Acclimatization
When undertaking our Manaslu circuit trek with the Annapurna circuit trek, it is possible you may confront altitude sickness at some point. This trek will lead you to the heights where for several days you will be at the elevations between 3,500 to 5,000 m.
So if you have incomplete acclimatization to altitude due to high climbing or walking speed, lack of rest, or lack of water, you will begin to show signs of altitude sickness. Such as headaches, stress, insomnia, digestive disorders, shortness of breath, dizziness, loss of appetite, disorientation, and irritability.
The key factor to successful and rapid acclimatization is therefore climbing steadily and spending time at altitude. Also, good hydration is essential during the acclimatization phase.
If you are not acclimatized, avoid alcohol, muscle relaxants, and sleeping pills which have a depressant effect on ventilation. You can also take Diamox pills to successfully combat (or mask) the effects of altitude sickness.
Accommodation, Food and Drink
During our 23-day-long Manaslu circuit trek with the Annapurna circuit trek, your accommodation will be in a double occupancy room at a 3-star hotel in Kathmandu, with a bed and breakfast basis. Please remember that you will be responsible for your own lunches and dinners.
During the land journey through Manaslu and Annapurna, you will stay in comfortable lodges (the best available) on a shared basis. Each day, you will enjoy breakfast, lunch, and dinner, along with coffee or tea and fresh fruits after dinner. Treated drinking water will also be provided to you during waking.
You will able to indulge from Nepali and local specialties to international dishes, not always but most of the time.
Transportation, Communication, Electricity, and Internet Facilities
All land transportation during our trip will be arranged using private vehicles on a shared basis. Depending on the number of clients, we will utilize a private jeep, bus, or van for airport transfers, while a tourist bus will facilitate travel from Pokhara to Kathmandu.
Your internal flight from Jomsom to Kathmandu will be taken care of as well. If your flight is canceled, a shared jeep will be organized to take you to Beni, from where you will be driven to Pokhara by bus.
For communication along your route, you can select either the NTC or Ncell local networks. In remote areas like Manaslu, it is advisable to go for the NTC network.
These SIM cards are readily available for purchase in Kathmandu without any complicated formalities. You also have the option of obtaining a virtual eSIM from NTC or Ncell, which can be activated online while you are still in your home country.
Both local networks provide 4G connectivity. Regarding WiFi, lodges typically offer this service, and tea houses also provide charging facilities for your devices.
Please keep in mind that these internet and charging services will cost you an additional price not covered by our package cost. In addition, mobile networks and internet access may be unavailable at high altitudes, particularly when crossing high passes.
Travel Insurance
Please note that without appropriate travel insurance, your access to the Manaslu region will be denied. Thus, before you proceed with our Manaslu circuit trek with the Annapurna circuit trek, verify your travel insurance has the following coverage:
- Medical assistance
- Emergency surgical interventions
- Ambulance services
- Hospitalization
- Repatriation in case of death
- Emergency rescue by helicopter
- Cancellation clause: recovery of money in case of cancellation of the trip or flight for reasons independent of the insured person
- Unexpected return from the trip caused by the illness of the insured person or a close relative
- Accidents occurred during hiking
Trip Preparation, Health, and Safety
Hiking in high mountains requires working on your endurance, preparing yourself muscularly, and, of course, acclimatizing to the altitude. Therefore, in the weeks preceding the hike, it is recommended to walk for 3 to 4 hours, several times a week, equipped with your loaded backpack.
To get used to mountain paths, you will need to favor steep routes, particularly with the aim of getting your muscles used to walking uphill and downhill.
And, of course, you should start with a less challenging trek in Nepal, like the Annapurna Circuit or the Ghorepani Trek. These treks will prepare you and give you a clear understanding of what hiking at high altitudes really means.
Rules, Regulations, and Permits
The Manaslu area (between Jagat and Dharapani) is designated as a restricted zone. So to visit this area, we must secure a special permit called a Restricted Area Permit (RAP). This permit is granted only to those who are part of an organized group trek that includes a minimum of two participants, arranged by a licensed travel agency like ours.
The other few permits that we will be needing for our Manaslu circuit trek with the Annapurna circuit trek are the MCAP Permit for the Manaslu Conservation Area, the ACAP Permit for the Annapurna Conservation Area, and the TIMS tracker card.
Please don’t stress about the permits as we will be responsible for securing these permits for you and the cost is also part of our package cost.
