Mardi Himal Trek Highlights.
If you are wondering what the best trek in Annapurna region is, than Mardi Himal trek is the easiest and convenient answer, because of the closer and stunning views of the Annapurna mountain range, lush green forest, lower altitude overnight camp with beautiful nature, snow covered Annapurna mountains range, and friendly people along the trek. You will be amazed by how beautiful the mountains views, and the landescape you can see during this trek. Not only the views, you will encounter many friendly and kind locals, and tourist along the way.
The Mardi Himal trek starts from Kande, a short (approximately 45 min) drive from Pokhara. At the beginning, the trail is steep up for about half an hour through the beautiful village and some lush green jungle and gradually up until Australian camp. When you reach Australian camp, you will be amazed by the views of the mountains that seem just standing in front of you.
While enjoying the views you can get some beverages, drinks, and food available at the local hotels and the restaurants nearby. Now, the journey continues to other destinations like Potana and Pretam Deurali. These are the ideal places to stay overnight at some basic hotels for your first night. Then, the trail continues through a danse, lush green forest towards Low camp.
The segment of the trek is well-marked and easier to navigate compared to many other trekking trails in the region. Hiking through the forest, you might encounter various wildlife, flora, and fauna. Additionally, you will be capturing incredible views of mount Fishtail, Annapurna South, and Himchuli. Ideally, the trek from Pretam Deurali to Low camp takes two days, but if you are physically fit and have considerable hiking and trekking experience, it is possible to reach Low Camp in a single day.
Continuing from Low Camp, the Mardi Himal trek takes you further up to Badal Danda, and High camp. From Low camp, the trail ascends through a rhododendron forest for about an hour until you reach Badal Danda. This location is an ideal place to take some photographs and see the valley that stretches from Annapurna base camp. There are few hotels and restaurants at Badal Danda where you can enjoy the views with a cup of coffee and tea. The trail continues along the ridge of the hill from Badal Danda to High camp.
If the weather is clear, you will also see the view of some part of Pokhara city along the way. Upon reaching High Camp, which is located atop a hill, you will find plenty of accommodation options. After having a healthy launch, you can spend the rest of the day exploring the area. High Camp is the last overnight stop before heading to Mardi Himal Base Camp.Your early morning trek to the viewpoint to see the sunrise on the mountains will take around two and half to three hours.
When you climb on top of the view point, you will capture breathtaking views of snow capped mountains such as Annapurna South, Himchuli, Gangapurna, Annapurna III, Gandharva Chuli, Fishtail, and Mardi Himal. But your destination is not finished yet to go to Mardi Himal base camp. From the viewpoint, you will walk for another two hours along the ridge to reach Mardi Himal Base Camp. Situated at an altitude of approximately 4600m/15,091 ft. the base camp offers majestic view of part of the Annapurna mountain range with Mount Annapurna I (8091m/26,545ft.), the only peak over 8000m you will see during this trek.
After enjoying the views at the base camp, you will retrace your steps back to High Camp then Low Camp. From Low Camp, you will descend to Siding through dense forest. Here, you have two options: either stay overnight to experience local homestays in Lwang with an additional day’s hike, or return to Pokhara the same day via Jeep or bus.
Overall, the Mardi Himal trek is exceptionally flexible, allowing you to complete it in anywhere from 4 to 9 days, depending on your pace and preferences. The trek covers a total distance of 40 kilometers/24.8 miles, with altitude ranging from approximately 1770m/5,807ft at the lowest point to approximately 4600m/15,091ft at the highest. Throughout this journey, you will be enthralled in stunning natural landscapes, encounter friendly and hospitable locals, and experience the charm of traditional villages and cultures. Whether you are a seasoned trekker or a beginner, this trek offers a balance of adventure and cultural immersion, making it a memorable and rewarding experience.
