Day 6 Visit Potala place, Barkhor Street, Jokhang temple, Shera monastery, etc. Potala Palace
Potala Place
Built in the 11th century, the Potala Palace is one of the oldest palaces in the world and also the highest palace. This stunning building sits at an altitude of 12,139 ft. and was originally a commemoration of Tibetan king Songtsen Gambo’s wedding. Back in the day, kings would build massive structures for their beloved queen much like the story of the Taj Mahal in India.
The Potala Palace boasts over 10000 ancient scrolls, over a thousand rooms, and statues of the same amount.
Barkhor Street
Barkhor Street is an ancient street still set in the ancient Tibet theme, surrounding the Jokhang temple in Lhasa. Devotees, especially those of the Buddhist religion, follow this street as a part of the Lhasa pilgrimage tour. This street offers a glimpse into ancient Tibet, what the streets looked like at the time, and the buildings around it.
Jokhang Temple
The main feature of this temple is the statue that goes back all the way to the time when Gautama Budhha was still alive. The temple itself is 4 stories high with a golden roof. There is a rule in Lhasa that restricts residents from constructing buildings taller than the height of Jokhang. This is done so that everyone can see the shiny golden roof of the Jokhang temple, a UNESCO heritage site.

Trip Information
How does our trip start?
Our trip starts once we reach Lhasa, the capital of Tibet. Lhasa has been on good terms with Nepal for hundreds of years. Back in the day merchants and traders used to travel to Lhasa and vice versa to trade goods or buy items not commonly found in Nepal. We will explore Lhasa before visiting all the other towns like Shigatse, Tingri, Saga, Zuthulpuk, Darchen, and many more.
This Kailash Yatra From Lhasa will have you visit attractions like Potala place, Barkhor Street, Jhonkhor temple, Shera monastery, etc. You will also visit the Gauri Kunda Lake, Yamdrok Lake, Mt. Kailash, and Everest Base Camp. Each of these places is picturesque and sure to be on your travel photo gallery for years, perhaps a lifetime. At the end of the trip, we will cross the Kerung border from Saga and reach Kathmandu.
Difficulty
We will be traveling mostly on jeep/bus based on the number of people in your group. This makes it a relatively easy trip but you will have to trek a lot of kilometers while visiting Mt. Kailash. Take it as a test of faith; you will trek for about 5 hours from Yamadwar to Dirapuk and an additional 5 hours to Charan Spursh the next day. In total, you will have to trek for 3 days, 2 of which are ascending days and 1 for descending to Zuthulpuk.
On a scale of 1 to 10, the Kailash Yatra From Lhasa is a 5. This tour does not require you to physically exert yourself to the limits which makes it an easy trip that is suitable for most people.
The difficulty of the Kailash Yatra From Lhasa also depends on the altitude you are trekking in. For instance, while trekking from Dirapuk to Charan Spursh, you will definitely feel the effects of altitude as you have to breathe more to let in an ample amount of oxygen in your body. Since the oxygen level is slightly decreased in the highlands, we will feel exhausted even while walking short distances.
Best seasons
The best season for the Kailash Yatra From Lhasa is the season of Autumn since it offers bright blue sky and generally good weather overall. However, this trip can practically be done throughout the year as the region of Tibet only receives 18 inches of rain and snow in a year, which is really low and well below average. This makes it a year-round destination.
However, there are favorable seasons that provide the ultimate views. For instance, one of the best seasons to do this Kailash Yatra From Lhasa is spring. There are no particular environmental changes compared to the other seasons but the weather usually steers clear offering clear, wide, and unforgettable views of the arid Tibetan landscape.
You can even do this trip in winter as the scenes are not much worse than in other seasons but the weather can get gloomy at times making the experience a bit undesirable.
Can a beginner join this trip?
The Kailash Yatra From Lhasa is a beginner-friendly trip that is also a good trekking destination for first-timers. Devotees who visit Mt. Kalish to offer prayers are not avid trekkers or nature enthusiasts who are traveling to the highlands for adventure. They are just normal people taking a trip to visit a holy site.
Keeping that in mind, we have made this trip as easy as possible to make sure that everyone dedicated to the faith of Lord Shiva and Hinduism in general, and even avid travelers, can join the trip without any second guessing. Aged people and little children alike can join the Kailash Yatra From Lhasa and they will have an overall good experience.
Altitude Sickness
There are points in this trip when we have to climb over 5000 meters above sea level, these places include the Everest Base Camp at 5200 meters and Dolmala Pass at 5600 meters. But we will not be spending the night at any of those locations which keeps us safe from getting altitude sickness. The reason people get altitude sickness is because they rush to get to higher altitudes without proper rest but since we will be traveling at a moderate pace and avoid rushing, we are highly unlikely to get altitude sickness.
People usually develop altitude sickness when they spend the night at high altitude after rushing the ascend. Since we will not be doing both, we are safe. We will climb high and spend the night at a lower altitude which is the best way to avoid altitude sickness.
However, in the rare case that you get altitude sickness, make sure that you let the guide know of any symptoms you are experiencing. The best thing to do is not to let the sickness develop any further. You absolutely need to let the guide know about your symptoms so he can help you get better as soon as possible and effectively.
Accommodation, Food, and Drink
For the entirety of the Kailash Yatra From Lhasa, we will be staying at basic hotels and lodges at some places. These accommodations will offer you every basic facility but amenities like hot showers might be charged extra at places like Darchen, Dirapuk, Yamadwar, etc.
As for food and drinks, you will have the luxury of choosing any vegetarian lunch and dinner options from the menu of the establishment we are staying at. Breakfasts are not covered by the Kailash Yatra From Lhasa package. We will provide you with mineral water for the entirety of the tour which is the only drink covered by the trip package.
Transportation
Our Kailash Yatra From Lhasa requires a lot of traveling by jeep or bus. We will arrange the mode of transport as per the size of the group and all the transportation expenses are covered by the package. You will literally cover thousands of kilometers on a jeep and over 40 kilometers on foot, over the course of this trip.
Permit
For this Kailash Yatra From Lhasa, you will need a Tibet Travel Permit and a Chinese tourist visa. We will help and guide you on how to obtain both of these permits and also cover the expenses related to it.
Trip preparation and fitness
Since you will have to ascend for 5 hours on average for only 2 hours, you do not really have to physically prepare yourself for this trip but it is always a plus point if you do. One of the best things about this trip/trek is the fact that it is so easy that basically anyone with an average or below-average physique can do it.
If you decide to prepare for this trip, you do not have to do much. The best thing you can do is to walk around or do some slight jogging, you don’t need weights or excessive cardio workout sessions.
Gadgets charging & Internet
Since this trip requires you to stay in the well-developed cities of Tibet, you will not face any power outages or issues while charging your devices. The internet facilities during your trip will be exceptional as well. However, in higher altitudes like EBC and Dolmala Pass, the internet connection can be a bit slower and laggy.
Your Extra expenses
Things like International airfare, personal trekking gear, extra accommodation, and food in Kathmandu, personal travel and medical insurance, extra snacks & any kind of beverages, extra activities in Kathmandu (sightseeing and others), tips for the staff members, rescue services expenses, and anything that is not mentioned as a part of the Kailash Yatra From Lhasa package are your extra expenses.
