Has Everest been calling to you, but the thought of long treks, expensive cost, and discomfort is holding you back? If that is the case, we invite you to join our week-long Lhasa – EBC tour from Kerung. In just three days, you will find yourself in close proximity to the world’s tallest structure, the Great Mountain- the Everest/Chomolungma. Compared to the other tour offered in Lhasa, Tibet, our Lhasa EBC Tour from Kerung Border (6 Nights 7 Days) Drive In Fly Out option is somewhat less expensive.
It features road travel through Kerung and a return flight from Lhasa, which means you won’t need to buy a round-trip flight to Lhasa, saving you money. This makes the tour more budget-conscious, as you will drive in from Kerung and fly out from Lhasa. With the footprints of the legendary climber George Mallory, the north base camp of Everest in Tibet boasts an altitude of 5200 m above sea level. Apart from Everest, our Lhasa – EBC tour from Kerung also concentrates on the most memorable and interesting places on Earth- the ancient forbidden soil of Lhasa and Shigatse.
Commencing from Kathmandu, the so-called Friendship Highway that historically connects Nepal with Tibet will take you to Kerung and Tingri towns of Tibet. The eternal Gawula Pass/Pang La Pass (5150 m) will then take you to EBC. The giant pyramids of Annapurna, Makalu (8485 m), Cho Oyu (8188 m), Everest (8849 m), Lhotse (8516 m), Gaurishankar (7181 m), Shishapangma (8027 m), and Langtang will light up your route. Our Lhasa – EBC tour from Kerung will then let you stop for a night at the highest Monastery of the world- the great Rongbuk which time and again has stood against all odds. Here, you will see all the effort of the trip blown away by the seductive sight of Mount Everest appearing before your eyes.
You will explore the EBC and also see Everest at the most glorifying moment of sunset and sunrise when the mountain blushes with red cloud fairies dancing beside her. Now the second part of our journey begins which will take you to Shigatse – the second largest city after Lhasa and the home of the admirable Tashilhunpo Monastery
The workplace and residence of the Panchen Lama, the world’s largest Maitreya Bodhisattva statue, and the tombs of the Panchen Lamas. Now the golden routes of our Lhasa – EBC tour from Kerung will take you to the great 4441 m Yamdrok Tso lake shimmering with the shadow of surrounding mountains. The all-time standing Karo La Pass will then lead you through Gyantse to Lhasa where the symbol of Lhasa- the Potala Palace awaits your arrival.
The palace is 117 m high and has 13 floors, and up to now, more than 6 centuries have passed and Potala has not been damaged by any natural or man-made disturbances. You will then continue to visit the sacred Jokhang Temple (Da Zhao Temple), its life-like Shakyamuni statue, and walk in the Barkhor shopping street where you can buy products that are only available in Tibet, such as incense, musical bowls, and thangka paintings.
All these cultural visits will provide insight into the resilience of Tibetan Buddhism, which is evident in every particle of Tibet and within the spirit of its people. Suitable for all levels of travelers, we will take our Lhasa – EBC tour from Kerung during the optimal period from late September to early June.

Trip Information
Weather And Best Season for Lhasa
EBC tour from Kerung Shigatse and Lhasa weather is relatively dry, sunny, dusty, and windy almost all the year with very scant rainfall even during the monsoon time frame between June through August. The climate of the Everest area on the other hand is shaped by the monsoon influence that brings the precipitation between 94 to 108 mm.
Here, winter between Decembers till February brings extreme cold heat between -12 and -17 degrees Celsius. Based on these climatic conditions, the perfect opportunity for our Lhasa – EBC tour from Kerung will be from late September to the early days of June. The autumn days of September, October, and November bless the extraordinary mountain views while the spring days of March, April, and May paint the barren Tibetan land with a hint of green, red, and pink.
Trip Difficulty
Our short 7 days Lhasa – EBC tour from Kerung is an adventure journey where the spirit of exploration meets the ease of travel. If the discomfort and the grueling days of walking have been barring you from reaching Everest, then you must join our tour. With no trekking involved, you will travel comfortably in a private car, jeep, or bus and enjoy restful nights in hotels with your own bathroom, hot shower, and air-conditioned rooms with internet access (Except for at Rongbuk, and Tingri where only the basic amenities are available).
However, you have to be prepared for the average elevation of 3500 m and above where the atmospheric pressure can be a bit low leading to hypoxic conditions. However, we have implemented all the necessary acclimatization steps so your bodies will be fully prepared before you advance to EBC. Thus, this tour is suitable for everyone with no requirement for trekking or mountaineering experience. Who can participate in our Lhasa – EBC tour from Kerung?
We suggest our week-long Lhasa – EBC tour from Kerung journey to travelers from the age group between 10 to 75 years old as ten-year-old children are capable of expressing their discomfort in time. With no demanding long daily walks, and the comfort of quality hotels and guesthouses at night, this tour is ideal for any travelers who are in good health, without serious medical issues, and who maintain average fitness. However, if you have a history of cardiovascular disease, blood pressure, respiratory disease, blood circulation, or other underlying diseases, we advise you to counsel your physician before joining us.
Altitude Sickness and Acclimatization
Although our Lhasa – EBC tour from Kerung trip takes only 7 days anduses private transports for all travels, altitude sickness still remains a concern. On the first day, you will be at nearly 2400 m elevation, increasing to 3000 m on the second day and exceeding 4000 m on the third day. One night will be spent at Rongbuk Monastery Guesthouse which reaches to altitude of 5000 m. The dry air of Tibet, with the lower oxygen at higher altitudes, may lead to mild discomfort, including headaches, fatigue, and sleep disturbances.
If you experience any of these symptoms, please inform our experienced Tibetan guide, who can delay your travel for a day or two or take you to a lower elevation. To minimize the issue of altitude sickness as much as possible, we have included an almost entire day for acclimatization in Kerung. To prevent this condition, you must focus on maintaining a daily water intake of ¾ liters starting from Kerung, even if you do not feel the need. By keeping your body well hydrated you will help yourself to combat the symptoms.
You can also help yourself by taking Diamox, a diuretic that lowers blood pressure and can be prescribed by prescription. You can take it for the entire 7 days when you are in Tibet in the evening before going to sleep.
Trip Preparation
As you get ready for our Lhasa – EBC tour from Kerung, we recommend that you place greater importance on your mental preparation than on physical training. By watching videos and documentaries about Tibet and its Everest BaseCamp, you will understand what to expect so nothing surprises you
along the way. As for physical preparation, this trip requires basic training so you will be able to face the unforeseen events in the best possible shape. You can do cardio training (cycling, running, fast walking) at least 2 times a week and some yoga sessions to improve mobility. You can also plan at least one mountain outing on the weekend and try to make an increasing difference in altitude.
Accommodation, Food and Drink
We will take care of all your logistical requirements for our Lhasa – EBC tour from Kerung. In Timure, you will stay in a quality lodge or guesthouse, where your room will have double beds. For most of your days in Tibet, you will be in a comfortable tourist- standard hotel that offers air-conditioned rooms, oxygen, private toilets, hot showers, and Internet service. However, during your stay at Rongbuk
Monastery, you will spend one night in a guesthouse that has hostel- style rooms to be shared by 4 to 5 travelers, with common sanitary facilities located outside. Breakfast will be served during the entire journey in Nepal and Tibet.
Please note that you will need to pay for your own lunches and dinners which will not exceed $15 to $20each day. At Rongbuk Monastery, the food may be quite basic, consisting ofTibetan bread, tea, and noodle soup. In other locations such as Lhasa, Shigatse, and Gyantse, you will find a variety of national and international dishes. Make sure to try the yak meat, chicken, and mutton dishes when you are in Lhasa.

Travel Insurance
Visiting Tibet, especially the Everest region, has its own challenges, Which makes taking out travel insurance essential. We therefore advise you to purchase the right insurance policy before you join our Lhasa – EBC tour from Kerung. It is because medical facilities in Tibet and Everest region may not meet Western standards and if available in Lhasa and Shigatse can be pretty expensive. Any serious health condition, severe altitude sickness, and accidents may raise the need for an emergency air ambulance (helicopter rescue) which may cost up to USD 2,50,000. Without insurance, you will have to pay the expense from your wallet.
Therefore, take the insurance that offers coverage for altitudes above 5,500 meters. In addition, remember that traveling to Tibet has very high costs therefore investing in trip cancellation coverage is also wise.
Regulations and Rules for the Lhasa – EBC tour from Kerung First of all, it is important to know it is not possible for foreign citizens to undertake any trip to Tibet independently without relying on an authorized agency. Each day of the trip has to be well-defined and the itinerary must be submitted to the Chinese officials. Therefore, prepare for the trip and reserve the tour at least a month before the planned departure.
Chinese Government law also requires all tourists to be accompanied by an authorized tourist guide with a comfortable private vehicle. In addition, to visit the EBC, a special permit is also essential. And, please remember, to enter Tibet from Nepal you will need to stay on Kathmandu soil for at least 3 to 4 working days, i.e. the time needed for your agency (us) to complete the procedures for obtaining the
Chinese Group visa.
After the confirmation of our Lhasa – EBC tour from Kerung from your side, we will ask you to provide us with your documents:
- Prepare 51 mm by 51 mm white background photos without any makeup when registering for the tour
- Photos should be recent within the last 6 months
- Your passport must be valid for more than 6 months from the date of return, with at least 3 consecutive blank pages
Visa and Permits
As your travel partner in Nepal, we will provide you with the Chinese Group Visa and make the initial arrangements for the Tibet Travel Permit. Please note that both permits are included in our Lhasa – EBC tour from Kerung package as is the access fee to the road leading to Everest Base Camp.
Tibet Travel Permit
Once we gather all the necessary documents from all our participating clients, we will forward them to our authorized Tibetan Agency. They will handle the submission of your papers to the Tibet Tourism Office to request the Tibet permit. Our Tibetan guide will then obtain and keep the permit for our group and show us on our arrival at Kerung.
Chinese Group Visa
The visa needed for Tibet is a group visa which is a single sheet issued to all the participants of the group. A disadvantage of this arrangement is that it requires all participants to arrive and leave Tibet at the same time. But the advantage is that no stamps will be placed on your passport. Once we receive the invitation letter from our Tibet Agency, we will take it along with your documents to the Chinese embassy. You must also join us there for your biometric registration. The embassy will retain all original passports until the group visa is prepared and issued.
If you wish to start our Lhasa – EBC tour from Kerung sooner, we can go for the Express Application Method for the group visa, which only requires three business days for processing. Otherwise, we can arrange the group visa through the standard procedure, which takes four business days to process. Please remember that the Chinese embassy is closed on weekends. Regarding the Visa cost, US citizens must pay $175 for a standard Visa
Application and $185 for an Express Application. For other applicants, the Visa fees range from $70 to $170 for a standard application and from $90 to $180 for an express one.
Note:
For access to Everest Base Camp, additional permits are also necessary which will be taken care of by our Tibet Agency after we forward the copy of our Group Visa. Currency and Money Exchange In Tibet, the official currency is the Chinese Yuan/Renminbi and you can withdraw money in cash directly from the ATM of the Bank of China or Agricultural Bank of China.
However, please withdraw cash only during bank opening hours. When traveling from Kerung to EBC, keep in mind that there wont be any ATM services along the way. Therefore, it’s wise to change your currency or withdraw cash beforehand in Kathmandu from banks like SBI, Nabil, Everest, Himalayas, or Standard Chartered, depending on what suits you best.
