Overview of Mera Peak with Island Peak Expedition

If you’re looking for a complete Himalayan experience , something beyond just trekking this Mera Peak and Island peak expedition is one of the best journeys you can take in Nepal. It combines remote wilderness, high mountain passes and two incredible summit climbs all in one trip.

We begin in Kathmandu where we take time to check gear and prepare for the mountains. From here, we fly to lukla a small mountain airstrip that marks the start of our trek. While most trekkers head straight into the Everest Base Camp trails , we take a quieter route into the Hinku valley one of the more remote and less crowded areas of the himalayas

The First part of the journey is all about the gradual and acclimatization. We walk through the forests of pine and rhododendrons, cross the rivers through the suspension bridges and pass through the small , peaceful villages where life is still very traditional. As we gain the altitude, the landscapes opens up into the wide alpine valleys and eventually into the glacial terrain

Our first big objective is Mera Peak. Its the highest trekking peak in Nepal and while it doesnot require technical climbing skills it is physically demanding due to the altitude and long summit day. We move slowly, allowing proper acclimatization and before the summit push and we provide basic training on using crampons , ice axes and ropes.

Summit day on Mera Peak usually starts early before sunrise. It’s a climb on snow and glacier but the view from the top is amazing. From the summit you can see many of the worlds mountains like Mount Everest, Lhotse, Makalu and Kanchenjunga on a clear day.

After celebrating and descending safely the journey gets more exciting. We cross the Amphu Lapcha Pass, one of the challenging and remote passes in Nepal. This part of the expedition feels really wild and remote with sections, ice and incredible glacier views. It’s a day but also one of the best parts of the trip.

When we enter the Everest region you’ll notice a change. There are villages, monasteries and a strong Sherpa culture. We pass through trekking areas and make our way to our second peak.

The final climbing goal is Island Peak. Unlike Mera Peak, Island Peak is more technical. It involves traveling on glaciers using fixed ropes and climbing an ice wall near the summit. We take time to prepare properly with acclimatization hikes, gear checks and basic climbing practice to ensure everyone is confident and ready. The effort is rewarded with an exciting summit climb and breathtaking views of some of the Himalayas famous peaks making it a truly unforgettable experience, on Island Peak.

Day 17 Summit Island Peak then Return to Base Camp (6,189m | 8–10 hrs)

Summit day starts very early, usually around midnight or 1 am , when it is freezing cold and completely dark. You begin the climb from Island Peak Base Camp using headlamps to see the trail. The first part of the route is a rocky and snowy path that slowly leads up to the glacier.

After reaching the glacier, you put on crampons and move carefully over snow and ice. The route becomes steeper as you go higher and you are often fixed to ropes for safety. You walk slowly in a line with your team, step by step because the air is very thin and breathing is difficult.

Near the top, there is a steep ice wall section where fixed ropes are used. You pull yourself up carefully using a jumar (Ascender) while placing your feet on the icy steps. This part is the hardest and requires full focus and strength.

After this, you reach the summit ridge, which is narrow and snowy. From the top , you can see amazing views of lhotse, Ama Dablam and other Himalayan peaks glowing in the morning sun. Reaching the summit feels very emotional because of the long and tough climb.

After a short time at the top, you start descending the same way back downcarefully climbing down the ice wall, then walking back over the glacier to base camp. The descent is faster but still tiring. When you reach base camp, you feel extremely exhausted but very proud and happy for what you achieved.

Trip Information

Best Season

The best time to do the Mera Peak and Island Peak expedition is during the two main climbing seasons in the Himalayas: spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). These periods offer the most stable weather, clearer skies, and safer climbing conditions, which is why they’re preferred for both trekking and high-altitude mountaineering in the Himalayas.

In spring, the trails feel especially vibrant. Rhododendron forests bloom in the lower valleys, adding color to the journey. Weather conditions are generally stable, and visibility is often excellent, offering wide views of peaks like Everest, Lhotse, and Makalu. It’s also a busy expedition season, so the trekking routes feel lively and well-traveled.

Autumn is equally reliable. After the monsoon, the air becomes crisp and clean, and mountain views are at their clearest. Trails are usually dry and comfortable for long trekking days. This season is also enriched by local festivals in the Khumbu, adding a cultural highlight to the journey. For many climbers, autumn is considered the most dependable season for high-altitude expeditions.

Winter (December to February) and the monsoon season (June to August) are generally avoided. Winter brings extreme cold and heavy snowfall, making summit attempts more difficult and risky. The monsoon season, on the other hand, brings heavy rain, poor visibility, slippery trails, and frequent flight delays to Lukla.

Overall, spring and autumn offer the best balance of safety, weather stability, and mountain views for this challenging expedition.

Terrain Overview

The Mera Peak and Island Peak expedition takes you through some of the most varied landscapes in the Nepal Himalayas. The terrain changes dramatically as you move from lower valleys to high alpine glaciers.

The journey begins in the Hinku Valley, where trails are remote but generally well-defined. Early sections pass through forested areas and traditional Sherpa settlements, with gradual ascents on earthy paths and stone steps.

As you move higher toward places like Kothe and Thangnak, the environment becomes noticeably harsher. Dense forests give way to alpine meadows, rocky slopes, and glacial moraine. Trails become steeper, narrower, and more physically demanding.

Beyond Thangnak, the route continues toward Khare and Mera Base Camp. Here, the landscape is dominated by snow, ice fields, and glaciers. This is also where climbers begin using mountaineering gear in preparation for the ascent.

After summiting Mera Peak, the expedition may continue toward the challenging Amphu Lapcha Pass. This section is remote and demanding, with steep snow slopes, rocky ridges, and exposed terrain.

On the Island Peak side, the terrain remains highly alpine. Climbers traverse glaciers, moraines, and steep headwalls. The final push to the summit involves fixed ropes and a steep climb over ice and rock.

Overall, the route offers a full spectrum of Himalayan landscapes—from forests and villages to glaciers and high mountain summits—making the journey both physically challenging and incredibly rewarding.

Difficulty Level

The Mera Peak and Island Peak expedition is a demanding high-altitude adventure that combines long trekking days with technical climbing above 6,000 meters.

The difficulty gradually increases as you move from the lower Hinku Valley toward higher elevations. Early sections involve long trekking days of 5–7 hours on uneven forest and mountain trails, which can already feel tiring due to constant ups and downs.

From areas like Thangnak to Khare, the challenge increases significantly. The terrain becomes rocky and glaciated, and the effects of altitude start to become more noticeable. With lower oxygen levels, even short distances can feel exhausting, and recovery becomes slower.

Above this point, the climb becomes technical. Climbers must use equipment such as crampons, ropes, harnesses, and ice axes, especially on glacier sections and during summit pushes to Mera Peak and Island Peak. Summit days are long and physically intense, often lasting 8–10 hours, and success depends heavily on weather conditions and altitude tolerance.

The route via Seto Pokhari, Ama Lapcha Base Camp, and the crossing toward Chhukung adds an extra level of seriousness. These are remote, exposed alpine environments with crevassed glaciers and limited access to rescue support.

Overall, this expedition is best suited for trekkers with good fitness, prior high-altitude experience, and a willingness to handle both long trekking days and basic mountaineering challenges.
