The Annapurna region brings together ancient mountain traditions, Buddhist monasteries, Hindu pilgrimage sites and landscapes shaped by some of the highest mountains in the world. This is the ever-evolving Annapurna Circuit Jeep Tour and Trek that spans between the green hills and the valleys of central Nepal and the dry highland terrain of Manang and Mustang. This trip isn’t just to the mountains. It is also a chance to learn ways in which local communities have made their homes, beliefs, farming methods and their way of life suit the Himalayan conditions.
Your trip starts with a scenic drive from Kathmandu via Besisahar, a jeep drive to Chame. Then it’s back on foot through pine forests, through traditional villages, through rocky mountain trails and open valleys. Pisang and Ngawal have introduced you to the Tibetan-influenced Buddhist culture of the region, with its prayer flags, mani walls, chortens and monasteries, all part of everyday life here. As you enter Manang, you’ll encounter more and more dry terrain where you’ll find stone houses, pastures for grazing animals and a panoramic view of the surrounding peaks.
Manang serves as a valuable cultural and geographical gateway before escalating to the heights of Yak Kharka and Thorong Phedi. The landscape is more rugged, plants are less dense and the impacts of altitude are more pronounced. An acclimatisation day in Manang is included to prepare for the challenging crossing that follows and to get to know the village and its environs.
The most difficult part of the trail is crossing the Thorong La Pass (5,416 m /17,769 ft). The early morning climb demands patience, appropriate equipment and watchful attention to weather and health. The path, after crossing the pass, heads down towards Muktinath, a sacred site revered by both the followers of Hinduism and Buddhism. The religious significance enriches the trip, bringing centuries of religious practice into the mountain landscape.
For those who would like to enjoy the cultural and natural diversity without trekking the entire traditional route around Annapurna, Annapurna Circuit Jeep Trek is for them. Selected lower portions are traversed by the Jeep and the central mountain section and high pass are covered on foot.
This trip can be done on Nature Explore Treks, with a guide, permits, porter service and teahouse accommodation. Talk to us about your travel dates and we’ll help you get ready for the high elevation portions, as well as plan the Annapurna Circuit Jeep Tour and Trek with a detailed plan and assistance.

Itinerary
01
Day 01 Drive from Kathmandu to Besisahar and Dharapani by Private Jeep
The trek starts with a private jeep ride from Kathmandu to Besisahar on the road through the hills, river valleys and rural communities of Nepal. The road winds through varying terrain, leading to terraced fields, the river and green hills. The road to Besisahar takes about 5-7 hrs depending on the traffic and road conditions.
Besisahar is followed by a bumpy road up the mountainside to Dharapani (1860m / 6102ft). This section traces the course of the Marsyangdi River through narrow valleys and small villages. Roadways may be uneven and travel times can also fluctuate, especially after rain.
Once you arrive at Dharapani, you’ll make a call to the local teahouse and get ready for the trekking days to come. Get a good night’s sleep and listen to your guide’s instructions on the next day’s hike.

Day 02 Drive from Dharapani to Chame by Jeep with Short Hikes
Following breakfast, you depart from Dharapani to Chame (2,670 m / 8,760 ft) in a private jeep. The road runs through forest-covered slopes, small villages, terraced fields, as well as rocky mountain land. If the roads are ok and the roadmap is followed, you will pass villages like Bagarchhap and Timang.
The drive usually takes between 2 and 3 hours to complete, but can be longer due to rough roads, roadworks, or temporary road closures. Your leader will modify a few walks for you at convenient points so that you can see around you without over-exerting yourself before the big hikes.
The administrative centre of the Manang district is Chame. Once in the village, you can wander the streets, have a view of the surrounding mountains and if time permits and conditions allow, visit one of the natural hot springs in the area. Overnight at a local teahouse and get ready for the first full day of trekking.

Day 03 Trek from Chame to Pisang
The trek commences from Chame towards Pisang (3200m / 10499ft) after breakfast. The path passes through pine forests, rocky stretches and small villages, embedded along the banks of the Marsyangdi River. The trail winds its way through pine forests, rocky stretches and small villages, nestled alongside the banks of the Marsyangdi River. The valley narrows in some areas as the altitude climbs and the steep banks of the valley and the mountain slopes rise above the river.
Depending on the trail and walking conditions, you will pass through Bhratang and Dhikur Pokhari. One of the remarkable features on this stretch is the Paungda Danda rock face, which is a large curve formed above the valley. Other peaks, such as Annapurna II, can be seen on clear days.
There are a few steep sections along the trail and a few gradual ascents, so taking it easy is key. You will finally arrive at Pisang after walking for about 5 – 6 hours. You can either stay in Lower Pisang or go to Upper Pisang (3,300 m / 10,827 ft) depending on the location of your accommodation. The evening is good for rest and enjoyment of the mountain.

Day 04 Trek from Pisang to Ngawal and Manang
Today we do the climb to the top from Pisang to Ngawal (3660 m / 12008 ft), followed by a climb to Manang (3540 m / 11614 ft). Following breakfast, you will head up among the villages and open country. This path is a bit stiffer than the lower trail, but offers excellent panoramic views over the Annapurna range and the valley below.
On the way to Ngawal, you’ll be able to see local monasteries, Buddhist prayer flags and stone houses. Your guide can stop here for a short break for refreshments and exploration, depending on your speed and weather conditions. The village is also a good stopover before heading to Manang.
It then gently descends and winds through the valley in more rural landscapes and small towns. En route to Manang, you will pass by the old Buddhist monastery which overlooks the village of Braga. It is a longer day of hiking, so take a steady pace and bring a lot of water. Once you have settled into your teahouse, you may have time to get a restful night’s sleep and get ready for the acclimatisation day.

Day 05 Acclimatization and Exploration Day in Manang
The day is dedicated to acclimatising at Manang (3,540 m / 11,614 ft). At this elevation, an additional day of acclimatisation is spent before the trekking journey to the more remote parts of the Annapurna Circuit. Your guide is unlikely to stay still all day and may suggest that you go for a moderate walk to a nearby site of interest, or take a short trip around the village.
You can either visit Gangapurna Lake or walk toward a hillside viewpoint depending on your fitness, weather and guide’s input. These outings are designed to give you the opportunity to see the surrounding mountains, but without the whole day of hiking. More strenuous walks, such as Ice Lake, have a significant ascent and are only recommended for those with a suitable acclimatization programme.
Also visit Manang’s traditional houses, small shops, bakery and Buddhist cultural sites. Drink lots of water, eat regular meals and don’t go running uphill. If you get a headache, nausea, dizziness, or unusual tiredness, tell your guide. The day will help to prepare you for the higher hike on the trail.

Day 06 Trek from Manang to Yak Kharka
Following breakfast, head off towards Yak Kharka (4,050 m / 13,287 ft). The walk slowly rises above the main village and passes through open fields, over dry grassland and areas of poor vegetation. The terrain becomes more hilly the further you travel away from the lower Marsyangdi Valley.
The trail climbs up in an even pattern through smaller villages and yak and other livestock grazing areas. The walking distance is shorter than the previous days as the walk takes more of an altitude climb, but one must walk at a comfortable pace. You will be guided to rest appropriately and throughout the ascent, you will be monitored for comfort.
On approaching Yak Kharka, the landscape opens up and on a clear day you will be able to see wide mountain views. The village is a collection of teahouses where trekkers can stay as they venture forward to Thorong La Pass. Once you get to your lodge, you can have lunch or a hot beverage depending on when you arrive and rest for the afternoon. Rest from any unnecessary strenuous activity and prepare your gear for the next step towards Thorong Phedi.

Day 07 Trek from Yak Kharka to Thorong Phedi or High Camp
The trek today will be either towards Thorong Phedi (4,525 m/15,912 ft) or High Camp (4,850 m/15,912 ft), depending on your confirmed trek itinerary and the guide’s assessment. This trail winds up and over open slopes and through parts of a rocky mountain area. Increasing altitude increases the thinness of the air and walking can be more challenging than in previous years.
Along the way is a little village called Ledar, where tea houses are located so rest stops can be made. From here the track heads uphill towards Thorong Phedi, the main stop just below the pass. Some itineraries continue up to High Camp, which will make the next morning less of a climb, but will put you at a higher elevation overnight.
Your guide will determine which overnight stop you should do based on acclimatization, health, weather and trail conditions. You’ll arrive at your teahouse and there you should go to bed, eat a nutritious meal and put together warm clothing, drinking water and necessary equipment for an early exit. The third day is the most tiring part of the way.

Day 0808 Trek from Thorong Phedi or High Camp to Thorong La Pass and Muktinath
The Annapurna Circuit begins early in the morning for the crossing of Thorong La Pass (5,416 m / 17,769 ft), the highest point of the circuit. The trail is steep and heads over rocky terrain and exposed mountain sides from Thorong Phedi or High Camp. Early starts are essential to be able to pass later in the day when it may be windy or wet.
The ascent is for the patient and depending on where you are going, you need to take short breaks often in order to get to the top. There is a place to rest at the top, take photos and enjoy the views of the surrounding mountains if weather permits. Your guide will keep a close check on the weather and your health during the crossing.
The trail is a descent from the pass for several hours up to Muktinath (3,760 m / 12,336 ft). It is a long descent and may be tough on the knees, especially following the challenge of the climb. Once you reach Muktinath, you will stay in a local teahouse where you can check in and get some time to recuperate. If you have enough light and vigor, you can visit the Muktinath temple area. Otherwise, take a rest after this tiring day.

Day 09 Drive from Muktinath to Jomsom, Tatopani and Pokhara by Private Jeep
You will return by private jeep from Muktinath back to Pokhara after breakfast. The road first dips down to the main town of the Mustang region, Jomsom (2,720 m / 8,924 ft). You can then stop in Jomsom to see the town, buy refreshments, or take photographs, depending on your departure time and the conditions on the road.
Then head south through the Kali Gandaki Valley to Tatopani (1190m/3904ft). The views along the way include a variety of scenery, starting with dry mountains and moving to greener hills and river valleys. Road surfaces can be rough or weathered, or parts of the road may have been damaged by landslides, weather events, or maintenance activities.
From Tatopani, you are on a jeep ride to Pokhara (approx. 822 m / 2,697 ft). It’s a long trip, so the majority of stops will be based on traffic, road conditions and available time. Upon your arrival in Pokhara, you will finish the trekking part of your journey and then go to your hotel or other guaranteed lodging.

Trip Information
Weather and Best Time
The Annapurna Circuit Jeep Tour and Trek can be done in various seasons, but spring and autumn tend to offer the best chances of mountain views and traversing Thorong La Pass. Clothing should be warm for high altitudes even in the warmer seasons of the year, because weather changes with altitude.
| Month | Weather and Trail Conditions | Suitability |
| January | Very cold at higher elevations, with possible heavy snow around the pass | Generally unsuitable for the standard crossing |
| February | Cold mornings, freezing nights and possible snow | Suitable only with careful planning and favourable conditions |
| March | Gradually warmer weather and improving trail conditions | Good, with possible lingering snow |
| April | Mild spring conditions, clear mornings and longer daylight | Excellent |
| May | Warmer lower valleys, with possible afternoon clouds and pre-monsoon rain | Good, especially early in the month |
| June | Increasing rainfall, cloudy views and possible landslides | Less suitable |
| July | Monsoon rain, muddy trails and possible road disruption | Generally not recommended |
| August | Wet conditions in lower valleys and possible transport delays | Generally not recommended |
| September | Rain gradually decreases and mountain views improve | Good, especially later in the month |
| October | Generally stable weather, clear skies and cool nights | Excellent |
| November | Clear mountain views, colder nights and possible early snow | Excellent, with extra preparation for cold |
| December | Freezing temperatures and increased snow risk near the pass | Requires careful weather assessment |
Best overall months: March to May and September to November. October is a popular time, but the final choice should be based on the weather forecast, snow conditions and accessibility of the passes.
During the Annapurna Circuit Jeep Trek, it may vary quite a bit from the warmer lower valleys to the exposed mountain areas. The weather forecast should be taken from the latest forecast by your guide before the high altitude stages.
Trip Difficulty, Daily Walking Hours and Physical Fitness
The problem is that the Annapurna Circuit Jeep Tour and Trek is a moderate difficulty trek, as it involves a long drive, consecutive days of trekking and a high mountain pass crossing. Whilst the Jeep ride will limit some walking, it will not take the place of the physical challenge of hiking at altitude.
| Trip Stage | Approximate Walking Time | Difficulty | Main Challenge |
| Dharapani to Chame | Short optional walks | Easy | Uneven paths and road stops |
| Chame to Pisang | 5 to 6 hours | Moderate | Gradual ascent and rocky trails |
| Pisang to Manang via Ngawal | 6 to 7 hours | Moderate to challenging | Steeper climbing and altitude gain |
| Manang acclimatization day | 2 to 4 hours, depending on the walk | Easy to moderate | Adjusting to altitude |
| Manang to Yak Kharka | 3 to 4 hours | Moderate | Increasing elevation |
| Yak Kharka to Thorong Phedi or High Camp | 3 to 5 hours | Challenging | Thin air and sustained climbing |
| Thorong La Pass to Muktinath | 7 to 9 hours | Very challenging | High altitude, cold and long descent |
These are approximate times and may vary according to fitness, weather, trail conditions and overnight stops. The pass crossing is the most difficult day and the first one must be early.
Endurance can be enhanced with regular walking practice such as the Annapurna Circuit Jeep Tour and Trek and uphill training and stair climbing. If you are fit, well-prepared and follow your guide’s directions, you can hike even if you have done it before. Persons who have medical concerns should seek medical advice before booking.
Altitude Sickness and Acclimatization Strategy
Anyone climbing too high, irrespective of fitness or age, may experience altitude sickness. When going above 3,000 m / 9,843 ft, the risk goes up, especially when sleeping at higher altitudes. Common warning signs include headache, nausea, dizziness and unusual fatigue and lack of appetite.
| Trekking Location | Approximate Elevation | Acclimatization Considerations |
| Chame | 2,670 m / 8,760 ft | Begin monitoring how you feel at altitude |
| Pisang | 3,200 m / 10,499 ft | Walk steadily and drink fluids regularly |
| Manang | 3,540 m / 11,614 ft | Allow an additional day for acclimatization |
| Yak Kharka | 4,050 m / 13,287 ft | Avoid rushing uphill and monitor symptoms |
| Thorong Phedi | 4,525 m / 14,846 ft | Rest before the pass crossing |
| High Camp | Approximately 4,850 m / 15,912 ft | Sleeping altitude is higher, increasing acclimatization demands |
| Thorong La Pass | 5,416 m / 17,769 ft | Cross only when conditions and health permit |
Walk at a comfortable pace and eat as much as needed while on the Annapurna Circuit Jeep Tour and Trek, taking the advice of your guide. Drinking water is not a cure for altitude sickness.
Do not continue to ascend if symptoms get worse. If the headache is severe, with confusion, difficulty walking, breathing at rest is affected, or it has severe symptoms, it is necessary to immediately seek medical help and descend. The acclimatization day in Manang is crucial, but does not ensure that you will be protected from altitude sickness.
Thorong La Pass Crossing: Preparation, Safety and Weather Conditions
Thorong La Pass is the highest pass on the Annapurna Circuit Jeep Tour & Trek at 5,416 m / 17,769 ft. This crossing is a start early, a steep ascent and a lengthy descent to Muktinath. Even the most experienced walkers may find a day physically challenging in the thin air, freezing temperatures and wind with snow.
| Preparation Factor | Recommended Approach |
| Departure time | Usually around 4:00 to 5:00 AM, adjusted to conditions and the overnight stop. |
| Starting point | Thorong Phedi or High Camp, depending on the confirmed itinerary |
| Walking duration | Approximately 7 to 9 hours to Muktinath |
| Clothing | Insulated jacket, warm layers, gloves, hat and windproof outerwear |
| Footwear | Well-fitted trekking boots with good grip |
| Water and food | Carry sufficient water, snacks and a packed lunch if needed. |
| Weather assessment | Check wind, snowfall, visibility and the latest local advice. |
| Pace | Walk slowly and take short breaks as directed by your guide. |
| Safety decision | Postpone or turn back if conditions are unsafe. |
The pass is sometimes closed during the winter, or when wind speeds are high, especially in the off-season. Don’t do the crossing alone or just to keep to the programme.
The Annapurna Circuit Jeep Tour Itinerary must be flexible enough to allow delays due to weather conditions, health, or track conditions which may make crossing unsafe. It’s not as important to arrive on a specific date at the pass as it is to get down safely.
Jeep Transportation, Road Conditions and Travel Time
With Jeep transport, the walking distance along the lower parts of the Annapurna Circuit is reduced and you can start trekking further up the Marsyangdi Valley. But mountain roads can be bumpy, narrow and may be blocked by construction or seasonal conditions like rain or landslides. Travel times are therefore indicative and not guaranteed.
| Road Section | Approximate Distance | Estimated Driving Time | Conditions to Expect |
| Kathmandu to Besisahar | 175 to 185 km | 5 to 7 hours | Highway traffic and winding hill roads |
| Besisahar to Dharapani | 40 to 50 km | 3 to 5 hours | Rough mountain road and uneven surfaces |
| Dharapani to Chame | 20 to 25 km | 2 to 3 hours | Narrow valley road with rocky sections |
| Muktinath to Jomsom | 20 to 25 km | 1 to 2 hours | Mountain road with variable surfaces |
| Jomsom to Tatopani | 50 to 60 km | 3 to 4 hours | Rough sections and possible road delays |
| Tatopani to Pokhara | 100 to 110 km | 4 to 6 hours | Winding roads and changing traffic conditions |
Distances and driving times are approximate, depending on specific route, road access and vehicle configuration. The first day is a long day as a combination of highway journey and drive from Besisahar to Dharapani.
Although a private jeep offers greater flexibility in stopping at various locations and carrying luggage, it cannot overcome road delays. Don’t pack all of the main luggage; keep essential medicine, warm clothing, drinking water and valuables with you.
Trekking Route, Daily Distances and Elevation Profile
The trek involves jeep rides through the lower valleys and trekking through Pisang, Manang, Yak Kharka and the Thorong La Pass region. The precise walking distance depends on the chosen trail, overnight accommodation and road access. The upper track at Ngawal is more of a climb than the lower.
| Day | Route | Approximate Distance | Highest Elevation |
| 1 | Kathmandu to Besisahar and Dharapani by jeep | Approximately 230 km by road | Dharapani, 1,860 m / 6,102 ft |
| 2 | Dharapani to Chame by jeep with short walks | Approximately 20 to 25 km by road | Chame, 2,670 m / 8,760 ft |
| 3 | Chame to Pisang on foot | 13 to 16 km | Pisang, approximately 3,300 m / 10,827 ft if staying in Upper Pisang |
| 4 | Pisang to Ngawal and Manang on foot | 15 to 17 km | Ngawal, 3,660 m / 12,008 ft |
| 5 | Acclimatization and exploration in Manang | 3 to 6 km, depending on the hike | Depends on the chosen excursion |
| 6 | Manang to Yak Kharka on foot | 7 to 9 km | Yak Kharka, 4,050 m / 13,287 ft |
| 7 | Yak Kharka to Thorong Phedi or High Camp | 7 to 9 km | High Camp, approximately 4,850 m / 15,912 ft, if reached |
| 8 | Thorong Phedi or High Camp across Thorong La Pass to Muktinath | 15 to 17 km | Thorong La Pass, 5,416 m / 17,769 ft |
| 9 | Muktinath to Jomsom, Tatopani and Pokhara by jeep | Approximately 180 to 200 km by road | Muktinath, approximately 3,760 m / 12,336 ft, at departure |
These numbers are planning estimates and should be verified with the final route. The 9th day is a long road trip and the road may impact arrival time. Another factor that affects the trekking distance is the choice of the trail from Pisang to Manang from either via Thorong Phedi or High Camp.
The Annapurna Circuit Jeep Trek is shorter but with a similar profile, involving the elevation gain and crossing the Thorong La. Weather, health and trail conditions will dictate the pace of your walk and the places you stop overnight.
Accommodation and Teahouse Facilities Along the Route
Most accommodations on the Annapurna Circuit Jeep Tour and Trek are in local teahouses or mountain lodges. The rooms typically are very simple, fitted with twin beds, mattresses, pillows and blankets. As you move into higher settlements, facilities start to become more basic as supplies and building areas become limited.
Some lodges in larger villages, like Chame and Manang, have attached bathrooms, hot showers and heating in the dining areas. Shared baths are standard for higher stops and hot showers might be paid for separately. Not always possible to heat a room, so a warm sleeping bag is beneficial, particularly in Thorong Phedi and High Camp.
Nature Explore Treks can book teahouse stays along the trek. But availability of the accommodation room is subject to the season and group size, as well as local conditions. In high season, you may have to settle for a less luxurious room and/or facilities. Store valuables securely; bring earplugs if noise sensitive.
Meals, Drinking Water and Food Availability
Typically, meals on the Annapurna Circuits Jeep Tour and Trek will consist of breakfast, lunch and dinner at local teahouses. Common food items include dal bhat, noodle soup, fried rice, simple pasta dishes, potatoes, eggs, porridge and Tibetan bread. A simple one is dal bhat, which is eaten with rice, lentils and vegetables, as it provides carbohydrates and some protein for the long walks.
This is due to the scarcity of food options at higher altitudes, as supplies are brought in through mountain roads. There is a broad range of vegetarian options, as well as differing storage and freshness of meats between settlements. Inform the guide on the trip about allergies or special dietary needs before the trip.
Use treated or properly purified water for drinking during the trip. These include boiled water, filtered water and purification tablets. Assume that stream water is NOT safe to drink unless it is treated. Bring a reusable water bottle and drink plenty of water, especially whilst climbing up towards Thorong La Pass. Hot drinks provide comfort, but should not be used as a substitute for adequate water intake.
Annapurna Conservation Area Permit and Trekking Requirements
The trek to Annapurna Circuit traverses the Annapurna Conservation Area and a permit from the Annapurna Conservation Area is needed to enter the area. A number of permits may be required and entry procedures may vary and should be checked before departing. Bring your passport and a copy of your permit along and have a copy of your permit handy on the trip.
Nature Explore Treks will obtain the necessary permits required for the agreed trekking service. Please submit correct passport information and documents requested in advance to prevent delays. Your guide will help you apply for permits at appropriate locations.
A licensed trekking guide is needed for route planning, safety and communication with the local accommodation providers. Generally, foreign visitors who are trekking in the designated areas in Nepal should use a trekking agency for trekking with a licensed guide as per the relevant trekking regulations in Nepal. Check existing requirements before travel, especially if there have been changes in requirements.
Please ensure that your permit is safe on the journey and adhered to at checkpoints. Permit arrangements cannot be used as a substitute for travel insurance, medical preparations and adherence to local safety guidelines.
Trekking Guide, Porter Service and Luggage Arrangements
A professional, English-speaking guide to lead the group on the trip, to organize the stay in the village, to check the status of the trail and to coordinate with local service providers. The guide also assists you with changing from jeeps to walking and gives tips on altitude, pace and weather during the Annapurna Circuit Jeep Tour and Trek.
The agreed amount of your main luggage will be carried by a porter, while you can walk with a lighter daypack. Have the necessary things in your own bag: water, snacks, medications, a warm layer, any rain gear and valuables. Check the luggage weight allowance before leaving with the agency, as the portering services differ depending on the group size and service package.
The package covers guide and porter salaries, meals, accommodation and insurance for the guides and porters. This does not include tipping, which is usually a personal decision that depends on the service provided and expectations held within the area.
Nature Explore Treks can coordinate the guide, porter and transport arrangements specified in your booking. Inform the team before the trip if there are any health, dietary, or special requirements.
Packing List for Jeep Travel and High Altitude Trekking
Packing for an Annapurna Circuit Jeep Tour and Trek will involve packing for the road, as well as for the cold mountains. The temperatures in lower valleys may be relatively warm, but it is possible to get below freezing temperatures near Thorong La Pass, particularly early in the morning.
Wear lightweight and comfortable trekking gear that can be layered. Have a basic kit list set up for jeep trips and have all of your needs for the day in your own backpack.
Wearing the right clothing and equipment:
- Waterproof trekking boots with good traction
- Warm socks, thermal base layers and trekking trousers
- Insulated jacket, fleece and waterproof outerwear
- Warm hat, gloves, neck covering and sun hat
- Sunglasses and high-protection sunscreen
- Backpack that’s comfortable with a rain cover
- Sleeping bag appropriate for anticipated mountain temperatures
- Reusable water bottle and water purification supplies
- Extra batteries for headlamp
- Essential first aid, blister supplies and personal medication
- Passport, permits, cash and insurance documents
- Snacks, toiletries, quick-drying towel and power bank
Pack heavier objects carefully and double-check the packing before leaving. Do not carry unnecessary equipment, but items for warmth, rain and appropriate footwear must not be sacrificed. The morning pass crossing is a critical time of day to be prepared with a well-packed daypack.
Travel Insurance, Emergency Evacuation and Medical Assistance
Travel insurance is highly recommended for the Annapurna Circuit Jeep Tour and Trek. Your policy should specifically include trekking up to the planned maximum elevation of 5,416 m / 17,769 ft, emergency medical treatments and helicopter evacuation if available. A lot of regular policies do not specify whether high altitude trekking is covered or not, or specify an altitude limit; read the policy carefully.
Heli evacuation is weather-, visibility-, landing- and aircraft-dependent and subject to approval by appropriate authorities. It can not be guaranteed at short notice, especially during bad weather conditions. Have your insurance company’s emergency contact number on hand and find out if you’ll need to obtain authorization to evacuate.
Your guide has a First Aid kit as provided in the package, but this is not meant to replace proper medical treatment. Bring personal medication and discuss medical issues with the guide before the trek. If the symptoms of severe altitude sickness occur, immediate assessment and descent should be undertaken, not further ascent.
Discuss your travel plans with a trusted person and carry copies of your insurance policy with you before you leave. Ensure that your policy will cover the entire journey, including the high pass crossing and planned road crossing.
Mobile Network, Internet and Charging Facilities
Annapurna Circuit has patchy mobile coverage depending on the village, terrain and service provider. You will be able to get a signal in larger settlements (Chame & Manang), but the signal may be weak or not available in remote parts of the route. Never use a mobile phone for communicating in emergencies.
Wi Fi is available in many teahouses, especially in bigger villages, but may be slow or intermittent and/or cost extra. There may be less connection in higher overnight places. Dining rooms or charging areas are usually found to have charging facilities. Some lodges have fees for electricity and there may be restrictions on charging at certain times of year or in the event of a power cut.
Bring a power bank, charging cables and an appropriate adapter. Don’t let the phone get cold in cold conditions, as that can lead to decreased battery performance. While it is expected that there will be a degree of communication during the trip, Nature Explore Treks can provide advice on this, but can make no guarantees. Make sure your guide knows you need assistance in communicating with your family or your insurance provider.
Cash, ATMs and Personal Expenses Along the Route
Carry enough Nepalese rupees for personal expenses because card payments and ATMs are not dependable in remote mountain villages. Access to banking services is available in larger towns before making the trip, but further ahead, the services are becoming more sparse.
The Annapurna Circuit Jeep Tour and Trek package covers the services outlined in the agreed tour plan, such as meals and teahouse accommodation while trekking. Personal snacks, additional drinks, hot showers, laundry, Wi Fi, charging fees and tips may be charged separately, however.
Have smaller denominations of cash ready to facilitate transactions in villages. Store it in a secure, waterproof pouch and keep it anywhere in your bag. Don’t expect to send out enough cash on the eve of the deadline.
A buffer for unnecessary delays on the road or for extra accommodation (or changes to the travel plan) is also wise. The costs resulting from natural disasters, road blockages, or any unpredictable event could be covered beyond package inclusions. Check the terms and conditions before travelling to ensure you are aware of any extras you may need to pay.
What Happens If You Cannot Cross Thorong La Pass?
Depending on health, weather conditions, snow level and trail condition, crossing Thorong La Pass is possible. Your guide may suggest that you postpone the crossing, go back to a lower settlement, or change the route if there is a safe alternative.
| Situation | Possible Action |
| Heavy snowfall or strong winds | Wait for safer conditions if a delay is practical. |
| Poor visibility or unsafe trail | Postpone the crossing or return to a safer location. |
| Symptoms of altitude sickness | Stop ascending, seek medical assessment and descend if advised. |
| Pass remains closed | Reassess the itinerary with your guide and agency. |
| Insufficient time to wait | Consider a revised route or return journey, subject to safe access. |
A direct alternative road across Thorong La Pass cannot be found. If roads are not accessible, then retracing the route and making appropriate arrangements for travel to Pokhara may be necessary.
The Annapurna Circuit Jeep Tour Itinerary should be flexible, but any extra accommodation, transport and other changes will incur additional costs. Nature Explore Treks can assist in planning for practical alternatives as needed; however, depending on conditions at the time, the safest alternative is to be considered.
Jeep Tour vs Traditional Annapurna Circuit Trek: Key Differences
The major difference between the Annapurna Circuit trek and the traditional Annapurna Circuit is how much of the lower route you take on foot. The jeep ride shortens the walk, but the steep section of the trip is not for the faint of heart and care must be taken to acclimatize.
| Comparison | Jeep Tour and Trek | Traditional Annapurna Circuit Trek |
| Lower route | Covers selected sections by jeep | Covers more of the route on foot |
| Overall duration | Shorter, depending on the itinerary | Usually longer, depending on the route |
| Walking distance | Reduced on the lower sections | Substantially greater |
| Road travel | Includes rough mountain roads | May use road transport for access and departure |
| Physical demands | High altitude trekking remains challenging | Greater cumulative walking and endurance demands |
| Cultural experience | Includes selected villages and walking sections | More time exploring villages along the trail |
| Acclimatization | Must be planned carefully despite reduced duration | More gradual ascent may be possible |
| Thorong La Pass | Crossed on foot in the standard itinerary | Crossed on foot in the standard itinerary |
| Flexibility | Depends on vehicle access and road conditions | Depends on trail access, weather and available time |
| Suitable for | Travellers with limited time who can manage high altitude trekking | Travellers wanting a longer walking journey |
Choosing jeep transportation does not make the pass crossing easy or remove the risk of altitude sickness. The two options demand proper preparation, proper insurance and flexibility.
The shorter one is better for those who don’t want to walk all the way around, but prefer to enjoy the central high-altitude part. The traditional trek is better for those with enough time and who would like to walk more of the trail.
Physical Preparation and Training Before the Trip
Preparing for the Annapurna Circuit Jeep Tour and Trek involves building cardiovascular endurance, leg strength and the ability to walk for several consecutive days. While this does help to shorten the walking days, there will be some difficult paths to negotiate, a rather steep pass ascent at 5,416 m / 17,769 ft and long walking days along the way.
Begin training several weeks before travel, slowly building up to more difficult sessions and longer duration. The walk with uphill and downhill walking through Muktinath can be a lot of strain on the knees, so practise before you go. Do some practice walks with the backpack you will be carrying.
Recommended preparation activities:
- Walk outdoors regularly, gradually increasing the distance and duration
- Try climbing the stairs or walking uphill to get used to endurance
- Build leg strength by performing appropriate squats, step-ups and calf raises
- Train on uneven ground while wearing your trekking boots
- Get in the habit of walking with a light day pack
- Take rest days and don’t ramp up the training too fast
- If you have any medical concerns or have not been exercising regularly, please consult a health care professional
Focus on recovery, hydration and proper footwear during training. Although fitness aids in coping with the hike, it does not prevent altitude sickness. Slow ascent, a day of acclimatisation in Manang and careful choice of route are still a must.
Booking Conditions, Included Services and Additional Costs
Check the Annapurna Circuit Jeep Tour and Trek before booking it, as you should get an understanding of the accommodation, transportation and what is included in the tour. Ask if quotations include all the jeep trips listed, trekking permits, a guide in English, porter service, teahouse accommodation and meals for the trek.
The services listed in your confirmed package can be scheduled by Nature Explore Treks. Check the luggage allowance of the porter, room arrangements, type of vehicle and how they will deal with road delays. It is also a good idea to verify the intended overnight stop before the pass crossing, as Thorong Phedi and High Camp have different gradients.
The package terms include international flights, Kathmandu hotel accommodation (unless stated), personal expenses, travel insurance, emergency evacuation, trekking equipment and tips. Other services such as hot showers, laundry, Wi-Fi and charging can also be charged.
Travel time may be affected by road closures, weather conditions and other unexpected events that can impact travel plans. Before you make a booking, read the terms and conditions of the booking and cancellation and also ensure that your insurance policy includes high altitude trekking and emergency evacuation.
Annapurna Circuit Jeep Tour and Trek FAQ'S
Q
Is the Annapurna Circuit Jeep Tour and Trek suitable for travellers with limited trekking experience?
Yes, if you are physically fit, well-trained and take your guide’s advice. Thorong La Pass is a strenuous and challenging pass that requires careful acclimatization.
Q
Can the itinerary be completed in nine days without rushing acclimatization?
The nine-day plan starts with one acclimatization day in Manang, but this is subject to individual requirements. Your guide will make adjustments to plans if safety demands it.
Q
Is it possible to reach High Camp instead of staying at Thorong Phedi?
Yes, it will depend on the condition, weather, availability of accommodation and the assessment of the guide. The next morning is shorter when you sleep at High Camp, but you are at a higher elevation when you do.
Q
Does the jeep drive from Muktinath to Pokhara always take one day?
The walk will take one day — but rough roads, landslides and traffic can make the journey take longer. Sometimes additional overnight accommodation is required.
Q
Can dietary restrictions be accommodated at mountain teahouses?
Basic vegetarian meals are easily obtained, but special diets may be hard to plan. Let your agency know in advance about allergies and food preferences.
Q
Will porters carry all my luggage during the trekking section?
The agreed luggage allowance is not necessarily what is taken by porters. Have water, medicine, warm clothes, valuables and critical supplies in your personal daypack.
Q
Are private jeep services guaranteed throughout the entire itinerary?
Jeep rentals are available in the following road areas. Road closures, weather and other unexpected situations may result in changes to vehicle access.
Q
What happens if I develop altitude sickness before reaching Thorong La Pass?
Your guide should stop and set up your medical evaluation. If serious symptoms do occur, immediate descent is necessary and crossing the pass may be canceled at that time.
Q
Can I visit Muktinath Temple after crossing Thorong La Pass?
Maybe, depending on when you arrive, the weather and your health. It is recommended to rest rather than sightsee after crossing.
Q
What should I confirm with Nature Explore Treks before booking?
terms and other possible costs due to inclement weather.
