Altitude and Acclimatization

A big part of this trek is the altitude, as you are above 3500 m / 11483 ft for a few days before you get to the high parts of the Kora. Lhasa is around 3,650 m / 11,975 ft, while the Lake Manasarovar and Darchen area is above 4,500 m / 14,764 ft. Dolma La reaches about 5,630 m / 18,471 ft.

Dolma La Pass5,630 m / 18,471 ftHighest point of Kora
JuthulpukAbout 4,820 m / 15,814 ftFinal Kora overnight

Slowly moving, correct rest, proper fluid intake and reporting unusual symptoms early are important factors in achieving good acclimatisation.

  • Don’t rush through the first few days in Lhasa.
  • Refrain from unnecessary strenuous activity.
  • Drink water frequently during the day.
  • Get a good night’s sleep and eat regular meals.
  • If you experience any of the following: headaches, nausea, dizziness, unusual tiredness or breathing problems, inform your guide.
  • If serious altitude symptoms are experienced, do not proceed up if symptoms are severe.

Kailash Kora Difficulty and Walking Conditions

The Kora isn’t a technical climb, but is physically challenging due to its high elevations, extended walking hours, cold temperatures and rough terrain. The circuit is commonly published and consists of three days, the second of which crosses Dolma La Pass (5,630 m / 18,471 ft).

Kora SectionApproximate DistanceApproximate TimeMain Conditions
Darchen to DirapukAbout 14 km5 to 7 hoursGradual ascent and rocky trail
Dirapuk to JuthulpukAbout 22 km8 to 9 hoursSteep ascent, pass crossing and descent
Juthulpuk to DarchenAbout 16 km4 to 5 hoursGradual descent and easier walking
Total KoraAbout 52 km3 daysHigh altitude and variable weather

Walking distance may vary depending on the vehicle drop off/pickup service offered by the local operator. Each day’s operating schedule may thus vary from the above figures. The most strenuous part is the ascent to Dolma La and the descent that day.

Dolma La Pass and the Highest Point

The height of the Kailash Kora is at Dolma La Pass (5,630 m / 18,471 ft). It is a steep ascent from the Dirapuk side and a descent to the Juthulpuk side. This is the most difficult section of the trek due to the combination of elevation, cold, wind, loose dirt and the length of the walking period.

Things can go from bad to worse at the pass. Snow or ice may persist in the early season and strong winds can create a windchill effect that makes it feel colder than the temperature. Move at a slow pace and keep to the group and guide.

No technical climbing is required, but good preparation is required. Warm clothes, comfortable walking boots, a hat, a pair of gloves and sun protection are especially helpful on this section.

Medical Preparation and High Altitude Safety

Medical preparation should start well in advance of the trip. This is a night trek with a few nights spent above 4,500 m / 14,764 ft, culminating at Dolma La (5,630 m / 18,471 ft). Individuals with existing medical conditions should check with a medical professional of their choice prior to booking if they are suitable to travel to a high altitude.

  • If recommended, have a medical examination.
  • Talk with your doctor about taking prescription drugs for altitude.
  • Bring all normal medicines with you in hand luggage.
  • Have a small First Aid Kit on hand.
  • If you have a persistent headache, vomiting, confusion, severe weakness or difficulty breathing, report this to the guide right away.
  • If symptoms become more severe, do not complete the Kora.
  • Adhere to the guide’s directions for rest, descent or medical aid.
  • If available, for oxygen support to be used, follow the operator’s safety procedures.

There is no such thing as being under-prepared for altitude and symptoms need to always be considered serious.

Tibet Visa, Permits and Travel Documents

Visitors to Tibet must make pre-arrangements for their trip, especially for trips outside of Lhasa, including Ngari and Mount Kailash. So travel documents and permits are necessary for restricted areas and requirements may change prior to the 2027 season.

As an organized tour service, Nature Explore Treks organizes the required visa and permits. A traveller must submit their passport and other documents that are requested within the specified time.

Flights to Lhasa and Ali Pulan Airport

This route suggests travel by air between Lhasa and the western part of Tibet. The Purang section begins with the flight from Lhasa to Ali Pulan Airport after the Lhasa sightseeing program. Then you fly back to Lhasa once you have completed the Kailash Kora.

Airlines’ operations, weather, airport conditions and local travel regulations may cause changes to the flight schedules in western Tibet. This means that if a traveller makes a short onward flight after their scheduled arrival they are at risk of missing a collapse.

Flight arrangements to Lhasa and back on the flight plan are included in your package to Ali. Nature Explore Treks arranges the local transportation; travellers need to look through the schedule of their international flight to see their arrival and departure time from Lhasa.

Transportation and Road Conditions

The route from the airport to Purang, then to Lake Manasarovar and finally to Darchen is also by road. The roads are in a remote high altitude area and travel times are subject to change due to weather, road conditions, traffic controls or local restrictions.

Cars are sorted by group size. Traveling long distances can be fatiguing due to the elevation so frequent stops and drinking fluids are helpful.

Accommodation During the Yatra

Changes in accommodation as you travel from Lhasa into the remote Kailash region. The trip to Lhasa includes accommodation in a hotel whereas in Purang and the Kora stretch, simpler accommodation is used. There is simple accommodation during the Kora in comparison with the city hotels.

Lhasa is the best hotel accommodation on the tour, the package will include hotel accommodation from three-star to five-star according to the arrangement. Travellers will have to eat humble pie on the Kora as compared to the good local accommodation found in Purang and Darchen.

There may be restrictions on rooms, baths, heating, hot water and electricity during the Kora. Shared facilities also might be required. This is a significant difference from the city part to the pilgrimage part.

Food, Drinking Water and Kitchen Support

Throughout the core program, meals are offered, most days, including breakfast, lunch and dinner. The package consists of vegetarian meals and hot drinks will be included. During the remote leg of the trip, a kitchen party facilitates food arrangements.

Appetite will decrease with higher elevations, but regular meals are still important. Easily digestible and simple foods are easier on long days of walking. It’s also a good idea to bring a few special snacks with you, especially during the Kora.

The drinking water comes in bottles, as per package instructions. It is still advisable for travellers to bring their own reusable water bottle in order to ensure that water is always within reach while walking. Do not depend on water sources in the out-of-the-way areas of the trail.

Mobile Network, Internet and Charging Facilities

Not all mobile networks and internet access are available during the trip. The larger settlements like Lhasa are better connected than the remote regions around Lake Manasarovar and the Kailash Kora.

Limited or no mobile service is expected during the Kora. Internet connectivity can also be unreliable, especially in off-site housing. This is the reason to get some essential information on your computer before heading out of Lhasa.

Electric charging facilities may be restricted at off-campus lodging. Have a portable battery charger with you and charge batteries as needed when power is present. If you make photographs, maps, translate or communicate with your phone, use it carefully during the Kora.

Packing List for Kailash Mansarovar Yatra

Packing should be concentrated on cold weather, strong sunlight, high altitude and a number of walking days. Clothing and weather can change rapidly, even in warmer months when you are traveling; you’ll need clothes appropriate for cold mornings or high winds.

The area of Lake Manasarovar is of deep religious significance in various faiths. In sacred places, travelers must obey the rules of the place and must not disturb other pilgrims in prayer or religious activities.

If there are any items that you wish to bring for Puja/Hawan, please inform the organizing agency before you leave. Transportation/boarder restrictions may apply to some items. Additionally, it is important to respect the local guide’s directions as to where and when religious events may be hosted.

Attractions During the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra

Other Treks and Tours in Tibet for 2027

If travellers have extra time, they can think about other Tibet tours around their Kailash tour. The answer to this will depend on time constraints, altitude restrictions, travel requirements and desired experiences. Outside the popular tourist areas, it is necessary to conduct the Tibet trip in an organized way and obtain the relevant permits.

Please note that Tibet travel routes and dates may be subject to change when booking and should be confirmed at the time of booking.

Emergency Procedures and Evacuation

The importance of emergency planning is that a high proportion of the journey is undertaken in remote high-altitude terrain. High altitude sickness is the most serious concern, but injuries, weather conditions and other medical issues may develop during road delays.

  • If you are feeling extremely unwell, tell your guide right away.
  • If symptoms are severe, immediately cease walking.
  • Follow the guidance of the guide about rest and descent.
  • Oxygen Support may be provided as specified in the package.
  • Local access and conditions are considered in providing emergency medical assistance.
  • People from the farthest areas may not be able to evacuate on the same day.
  • Have travel insurance information available.
  • Check with insurance before traveling if they have a high-altitude and emergency evacuation policy.

The Kora is about 5,630m / 18,471ft in altitude which can lead to more complex emergency response than in a city. Early reporting of symptoms is therefore important.

Money, Currency, Tipping and Extra Expenses

The primary currency in Tibet is Chinese yuan or RMB. It is suggested that travellers bring enough local money to pay for any and all personal expenditures not covered by the package. In remote areas, there are fewer means of payment than in Lhasa.

Tipping cost is not covered in the package and must be booked separately. There is a possibility for travellers to tip the guides and drivers, Sherpa and supporting crew at the end of the trip in accordance with the service rendered.

Additional personal costs may be extra drinks, extra snacks, purchases of personal items, laundry, optional services, extra accommodation and costs resulting from issues beyond the regular itinerary. Don’t use cards or mobile payment exclusively, but have some emergency money to fall back on.

Responsible Travel and Local Customs

Responsible travel is especially crucial in the vicinity of the monasteries, sacred lakes, pilgrimage routes and local communities. Passage by the route will involve passing through areas that are significant to the local religion and culture and it is important that visitors pay attention to local instructions and act with respect.

  • Respect religious sites by wearing appropriate clothing.
  • Obey the rules and regulations of making photos in the monasteries and temples.
  • Please ask before taking their picture.
