Kailash Manasarovar Yatra from Lhasa to Mount Kailash is not simply a trip through the highlands of Tibet. It is a pilgrimage of faith, old traditions, overpowering mountain scenery and the gentle pace of Tibetan life. The Kailash Manasarovar Yatra from Lhasa brings these elements together, beginning with the spiritual atmosphere of Lhasa and continuing across remote valleys, high mountain passes and sacred lakes before reaching the revered Mount Kailash region.
The trip starts with an important cultural beginning in Lhasa. The city has Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple and Barkhor Square, where Tibetan Buddhist culture is intertwined with the lifestyles of the people. Unlike the hustle and bustle of today’s big cities, prayer wheels, monasteries, incense and pilgrims make a completely different ambiance. It is also good to spend some time in Lhasa, so that the traveller can acclimatize himself to the high altitude before heading west.
Outside of Lhasa, the terrain evolves gradually. The vast Tibetan plateau is traversed by long road trips, leaving open valleys, far-off snow-covered mountains and isolated communities in their wake. The next places of interest are Shigatse and the town of Saga, from which the journey will head on to the Manasarovar Lake and Darchen. You travel more and more remote areas where nature prevails and becomes more prominent.
One of the stopping points of the trip, which is also a major pilgrimage site is Lake Manasarovar. Its blue waters lie beneath the height of the high Himalayas, which provide a serene atmosphere for prayer and darshan. The nearby region of Mount Kailash is of immense religious significance for the followers of Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Bon. The pilgrimage is also heavily linked to Lord Shiva and the separate belief systems also see Mount Kailash as a holy mountain for their pilgrimage.
The three-day Kailash Parikrama is the most spiritual part of the trip. The walking route passes through rugged terrain and reaches Dolma La (5,630 m / 18,471 ft). This section is demanding and needs patience, physical preparation and careful acclimatization. Not only do the mountain views contribute to the experience, but so do the pilgrims who are making their way around the sacred circuit.
Every step brings a distinct highlight to the trek, from the culture-rich lanes of Lhasa to the open Tibetan plateau, sacred lake Manasarovar and the arduous trek around Kailash. For those willing to travel with patience, respect and good intent, the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra from Lhasa is a very meaningful pilgrimage.
Make a well-considered route, be prepared for the challenges of high-altitude travel and take time to explore the destinations and not just the scenery. You can concentrate on the pilgrimage and the journey ahead, as Nature Explore Treks will arrange the necessary permits, transportation, accommodation and support.

On arrival in Kathmandu, we will pick you up from the airport and take you to your hotel. The elevation of Kathmandu is approximately 1400 m (4593 ft), which is good enough to start your journey into the higher plateau of Tibet.
Once you’re in the hotel, you can get some sleep and recuperate from your international trip. There is a chance, depending on the time of arrival, to get to know other members of the group and to share the initial arrangements for the pilgrimage.
The evening will be kept fairly simple. Overnight stay will be in Kathmandu, with a briefing for the religious visits and yatra the next day.

The afternoon will be dedicated to the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra Briefing. Our staff will explain the route, travel arrangements, documents required and procedures for traveling in groups, as well as key considerations for such high-altitude travel.
There will also be a chance to go over your gear and answer questions before departing Kathmandu. The fact that the trip will involve long road trips and high altitudes in the Kailash area makes the briefing very helpful.

This is the full walking stretch to Zuthulph and should take approximately 8-10 hours. The trail will have some steep areas, loose ground and thin air, so everybody should be at a steady pace and follow the instructions given by the guide.
The trail then descends to the vicinity of Gauri Kund and then proceeds towards Zuthulphuk, after crossing Dolma La. You’ll spend the night at the base of the mountain, which is called Zuthulphuk (4,790 m / 15,715 ft).

Day 13 Complete the Kailash Parikrama and Drive to Saga
The last walk starts from Zuthulphuk. The Kailash Parikrama will be undertaken, followed by the trek outside the valley towards the road access point. The actual walking distance at the end of the route is typically 8 to 11 km and lasts for about 3 to 5 hours, depending on the route.
Once you arrive at the vehicle spot, you’ll be greeted by the group transport and proceed to Saga. The trip is a long road journey, about 435 to 470 km and can take between 7 and 9 hours.
Flying from Ali to Lhasa after the Parikrama could be a query raised by some travelers. If the group is travelling together under group permits and documents, everyone must be carried as part of the same planned arrangement, until the operator and the authorities have agreed to a different arrangement.

It may seem like a significant drop in elevation when you’re settling into the town of Shigatse on your descent from the days around Kailash. When you arrive in the city, you’ll be able to settle into the hotel and get a good night’s rest. It is a time to relax and unwind after the long journey.

Important Route Options for 2027

| Return via Ali | A flight from Ali to Lhasa may be possible after completing the Parikrama, subject to the confirmed itinerary and flight availability. |
| Return to Mainland China | Travelers may also discuss continuing from Lhasa to mainland China instead of returning to Kathmandu. This must be arranged in advance. |

Understanding the Kailash Parikrama
The Lhasa to Kailash Manasarovar tour is the culmination of its primary goals at Darchen, where the Parikrama starts. The walking route passes through Yamadwar, Dirapuk, Dolma La, Gauri Kund and Zuthulphuk before returning toward Darchen.
The walk of the Parikrama is by no means a regular tour of the city. It is done at extremely high elevation and the second day will feature the highest elevation. So it is advisable that travelers be ready for slow walking, low temperatures, variable weather and few facilities.
If you require help, this should be arranged with your horse or porter beforehand. The availability and price may be subject to change – these services are not guaranteed to be provided unless specifically stated in the booking.
Best Time for Kailash Yatra 2027
The Kailash Yatra 2027 primarily takes place in the summer months when the route is more conducive to travel.
| Period | General conditions |
| May | Beginning of the main season, with cold conditions |
| June | Warmer conditions and increasing activity |
| July | Main travel period, with possible weather changes |
| August | Busy pilgrimage period |
| September | Cooler conditions and generally suitable travel |
| October | Colder conditions and possible seasonal limitations |
The weather is very changeable in the Kailash region. Permits, local regulations, road conditions and operating arrangements also determine final departure dates.
Please note that travellers should choose the date on which they want to travel, as per the confirmed travel schedule and not necessarily depending on the general season.

Submit your passport and other information within the given time frame.
Confirm your arrival plan.
Discussions can be held in Kathmandu on whether you will be travelling from Kathmandu or from Lhasa.

Can You Join Directly from Lhasa?
Yes, direct joining from Lhasa can be discussed for travelers who do not need the Kathmandu portion of the trip.
This is not a last-minute, stand-alone solution, however. A Tibet Permit, transport, accommodation and group documentation must be in the same name as the agreed travel plan.
The same applies to travelers who want to return from Ali to Lhasa by flight or continue to mainland China. These must be organized before travel and agreed with the operator. Permits and group arrangements are made and the group is not able to split up into various return plans.
Why Choose Nature Explore Treks for the Yatra?
Nature Explore Treks is a Kathmandu-based trekking and tour company which organizes treks to Nepal, Tibet and Kailash. Its current Kailash programs include Lhasa-based and other route options.
The main benefit of the organized route for this one is that the main travel arrangements are done together. These include transportation, accommodations, permits, guides, meals and support staff.
Other services offered by the company include tourist services, including the provision of Tibet guides, drivers, kitchen staff, Sherpa assistants, vegetarian meals, hot drinks and requisite travel documents.
When making a high-altitude trip as the type described here, it is important for travelers to understand exactly what is included in the confirmed package before deciding to book a package based on the package price alone.
Weather and Best Time to Visit
The period from May to September is considered to be the best time for the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra from Lhasa, although the months of May, June and September may offer more favorable conditions for the long road journey and the Kailash Parikrama. In the warmer months, cold winds, rain and snow may occur at high altitude, so watch the weather closely.
| Month | General Weather | Kailash Region Conditions | Yatra Suitability |
| January | Very cold and dry | Heavy snow and freezing conditions | Not recommended |
| February | Very cold | Snow and limited services | Not recommended |
| March | Cold | Winter conditions continue | Not recommended |
| April | Cold to cool | Some routes may still have snow | Limited |
| May | Cool, generally dry | Trekking season begins, possible snow at higher sections | Good |
| June | Mild daytime temperatures, cold nights | Generally favorable, but busy around Saga Dawa | Excellent |
| July | Warmer with occasional rain | Afternoon rain and cloud can affect visibility | Moderate |
| August | Mild to warm, wetter period | Rain and cloud possible, high passes can remain cold | Moderate |
| September | Cool and generally drier | Good visibility and favorable trekking conditions | Excellent |
| October | Increasingly cold | Colder nights and possible early snow | Limited to good, depending on conditions |
| November | Cold and dry | Winter conditions begin | Not recommended |
| December | Very cold | Snow and freezing conditions | Not recommended |
The peak pilgrimage season is typically from the end of spring through early fall. Roads and views may be damp and overcast in July and August. September is a great month for travelers wishing to enjoy cooler conditions and generally better weather.
Yatra Difficulty
The trek to Kailash Manasarovar from Lhasa is not a regular sightseeing tour but a challenging trek on high-altitude terrain. The toughest part of the tour is the three-day Kailash Parikrama, particularly the second walking day that passes through Dolma La, the highest point at about 5,630 m / 18,471 ft.
| Section | Approximate Distance | Typical Duration | Difficulty | Main Challenge |
| Lhasa sightseeing | Local | Full day | Easy | Altitude adjustment |
| Lhasa to Shigatse | About 320 to 370 km | 6 to 9 hours | Easy to moderate | Long road journey |
| Shigatse to Saga | About 450 to 460 km | 7 to 9 hours | Moderate | High altitude and long drive |
| Saga to Manasarovar | About 435 to 452 km | 7 to 8 hours | Moderate | Remote high-altitude road |
| Darchen to Dirapuk | About 14 km | 5 to 7 hours | Moderate to difficult | Thin air and uphill sections |
| Dirapuk to Zuthulphuk | About 22 km | 8 to 10 hours | Very difficult | Dolma La crossing |
| Zuthulphuk to Darchen | About 16 km | 4 to 6 hours | Moderate | Long final walking section |
The total distance of the Parikrama is about 52 km and the highest point is at Dolma La (5630m / 18471 ft).
Fitness is useful, but not a substitute for being fit enough to avoid altitude sickness. Its walkers should be ready to walk for several hours and be prepared for the cold and wind and very limited facilities and accommodations.
Altitude and Acclimatization
Altitude is an important component of the Kailash Manasarovar yatra from Lhasa. The ascent to Lhasa is in the region of about 3650 m / 11975 ft and the hike is a gradual one, moving higher through Shigatse, Saga, Lake Manasarovar and Darchen.
The body takes time to acclimatize itself to the lower supply of oxygen at a higher altitude. The Lhasa acclimatization is included in our itinerary, followed by a trip towards the Kailash region. After ascending to higher levels, passengers are advised to maintain a slow pace and to avoid any unnecessary hard work.
- Consume water throughout the day.
- Walk at your own pace and rhythm.
- Don’t overexert yourself after climbing or going to a higher elevation.
- Avoid alcohol
- If you get a headache that doesn’t go away, weakness, vomiting, confusion, or trouble breathing, tell the guide right away.
Gradual ascent and further acclimatization in subsequent days are recommended above 3000 m / 9800 ft.
Visa, Permits and Travel Documents
For the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra from Lhasa, travelers must have the appropriate travel documents before entering Tibet and travelling to the restricted Kailash region. The final document may vary for different nationalities or depending on the entry point and the current laws in China, so please check the document with the final destination before travelling.
Nature Explore Treks will make all the necessary permits and paperwork part of the package. These may include a Tibet Travel Permit and other permits needed to travel outside of Lhasa to the Kailash and Ngari region. No one can just come to Mount Kailash without permission and dates and arrangements for groups are linked to the approved travel documents.
Information relating to the passport will need to be accurate and provided to the organizing agency well before departure. Your name, your passport number, your date of birth and your nationality should be the same as the travel documents.
People traveling from Kathmandu may require a visa based on their nationality and the status of the visa regulations at the time of travel. Because these policies can change, Nature Explore Treks will provide the relevant instructions before processing your documents.

Accommodation
The accommodation on the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra from Lhasa varies from the developed city to the remote area of Kailash. The package is available to stay comfortably in a Lhasa hotel, ranging from 3-star to 5-star hotels as confirmed by the tour company.
The buildings get simpler the further you move towards Lake Manasarovar and Darchen. This package comprises a decent standard hotel in Darchen and a guesthouse in the Parikrama and vicinity of Manasarovar.
The facilities one can expect while traveling during Parikrama are not the same as those one can find in Lhasa. Rooms and toilets may be limited and simple and the availability may be subject to the number of pilgrims travelling at the same time. There might also be restrictions on electricity and hot water.
The use of the accommodation is to provide a convenient place to sleep between long road trips and hikes. Rooms will be shared as per the confirmed package and availability.
Food and Drinking Water
Dinner during Kailash Manasarovar Yatra from Lhasa is included in the package. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are provided throughout the trip as per the itinerary and vegetarian options will be available throughout.
The kitchen staff will assist the group in the out-of-the-way portion of the trip. Hot drinks are also available, very helpful on cold mornings and evenings at high altitudes. Drinking water is supplied in the form of a bottle.
By the end of this area in the west of Tibet, options are reduced for meals. It is, therefore, advisable for travellers to expect simple vegetarian food instead of the same as they get in Kathmandu or Lhasa.
Drink fluids and have regular meals, even if you’re not hungry because of the altitude. During the higher portions, light, easy-to-digest foods are tastier. Bring some snack items you like, like energy bars, nuts, or dried fruit (if you have any preferences).
Health and Medical Considerations
Lhasa is an important point for good health preparation for the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra, as much of the drive is above 3,500 m / 11483 ft and the Parikrama is above 5,500 m / 18045 ft.
If you have a heart, lung, or other major medical condition, be sure to consult with a doctor before making your trip to high altitudes. It is also important for travelers to have sufficient supplies of their usual medications for the entire trip and a copy of important prescriptions.
- If you have any health concerns, get a medical evaluation before traveling.
- Do not attempt to go through the experience quietly; tell the guide about serious symptoms.
- Eat at regular intervals and drink plenty of water.
- Shade yourself from intense sunlight using a hat, sun cream and appropriate clothing.
- Stay warm, especially for early morning walks and at night.
- If you’re feeling unwell, don’t push yourself.
- Take medication for altitude as directed by a physician.
Even healthy, physically fit travellers are susceptible to the effects of high altitude. Fitness will not protect against altitude illness and susceptibility may differ.
Oxygen and Altitude Sickness
One of the key factors that needs to be taken into account while doing the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra from Lhasa is the problem of altitude sickness. Acute mountain sickness can have a range of symptoms such as headache, dizziness, tiredness, nausea and insomnia.
Oxygen support is provided with your package in case you need it. Oxygen should not be considered a substitute for good acclimatisation or descent in the event of serious altitude illness occurring, however.
- Tell the guide if the headache is continuing, if you are feeling sick to your stomach, or unusually tired or dizzy.
- Do not continue climbing if symptoms are becoming worse.
- If there is confusion, trouble walking, severe difficulty breathing, or serious weakness, attention must be paid immediately.
- If appropriate, oxygen can be administered as a component of emergency assistance.
- Descent to a lower altitude is an important treatment for serious altitude illness.
- More serious cases of altitude illness must be descended immediately and oxygen used if available.
Acetazolamide is a medicine that can be used to prevent altitude sickness and travelers should consult with a qualified physician before travelling and not travel without medical advice.
Travel Insurance
The Kailash Manasarovar Yatra from Lhasa package does not cover travel insurance; therefore, it is to be arranged by the Kailash Manasarovar tourists before traveling.
The policy should be reviewed thoroughly as it may not include high altitude activities. Seek coverage covering the following items: treatment at emergency facilities, high altitude trekking/ hiking, evacuation and trip interruption (where applicable).
At Dolma La Pass, the itinerary will reach around 5630m / 18471ft, which should be noted on the insurer’s itinerary. This data is relevant because some policies have an altitude limit or exclude activities over a certain altitude.
Carry your insurance policy and emergency contacts with your travel documents. Also, it helps to have a copy on your phone or in your email.
Make sure to check the terms of the policy with the insurance company before buying one. Nature Explore Treks are happy to provide general trip information; however, it is the responsibility of the traveller to choose the appropriate insurance cover.
