Day 1 Fly from Kathmandu (1350 m) to Gonggar Airport, 1 hour 15 minutes, and drive to Lhasa city (3680 m), 1.5 hour

We will commence our day with an early morning air flight over Kanchenjunga and Everest massif to reach the Gonggar Airport of Lhasa. At the airport, we will meet our local guide who will drive us towards the fabulous hotel in the Lhasa town alongside the Brahmaputra River, situated 60 km away.

Driving 1.5 hours, we will experience the new Lhasa at its best. It is best to relax the entire time in the hotel room for the best adaptation to the new air of Lhasa.

Day 2 Lhasa Day Tour (Sera Monastery, Barkhor street, Jokhang monastery

We will dedicate the entire day to visiting the amazing sites of Lhasa. Please note that the order of the experiences in Lhasa may not necessarily come in the order as described.

Among other things, we will definitely see the Sera Monastery positioned beneath the Phurba Chok Ri ridge. The main highlight of this monastery is the philosophical discussion between the monks and disciples in their unique gestures and symbols.

We will also go for a pilgrimage walk around the Jokhang Temple, the most pious building for Tibetans. We will circle around the Jokhang in clockwise direction along Barkhor Street and experience the deepest religiosity.

In the evening, we will have our diner in a Tibetan teahouse surrounded by numerous locals

Day 3 2nd Day , Lhasa Day Tour ( Potala palace, and visit local markets)

Today, we will be heading to the remarkable red and white palace of Potala constructed wonderfully on top of the Marpo Ri- the Red Peak. Magnificent mandalas, beautiful wall paintings, and numerous Buddhist shrines are worth marveling at.

We will leave Potala Palace and walk a little further to Longwangtan Park. After walking in the park and admiring the Palace once more, we will move on to experience what Lhasa has to offer.

There are numerous old and new markets in Lhasa offering antique to new artifacts.

Day 4 Drive from Lhasa - Gyantse (3950 m) - Shigatse (3845 m) via the Yamdrok Tso Lake, 7-8 hours

We will again resume our drive along the popular and comfortable Friendship Highway. Turning southwest, we will drive over the 4794 m Khamba La Pass and bid farewell to Lhasa.

We head down to the shore of the 4400 m Yamdrok Tso Lake-  Scorpion-shaped lake. Taking some time to walk along its bank is truly a wonderful feeling.

Next, we will head over the 5010 m Karo La Pass that opens the way to Gyantse. Here, the Palkhor Chode Monastery awaits our visit which is mainly known for its Khumbum Stupa.

Now, driving forward along the irrigated land, we will finally reach the comfort of our Shigatse hotel.

Day 5 Shigatse - Tingri (4300 m) – EBC (5200 m), 7-8 hours

Again continuing our drive along the Friendship Highway, we will pass by Lhatse and over the 5220 m Gyatso La (Lhakpa La) Pass. Driving down towards the Brahmaputra River, we will reach New Tingri (Shegar).

We are now inside the Mount Everest Conservation Area. Leaving the Friendship Highway, we will turn south and drive above the 5200 m Gawula Pass. Everest can be seen for the first time along with Makalu, Cho Oyu, Lhotse, Gyanchung Kang, and Chomo Lonzo.

The road now heads down through the charming valley and approaches the Rongbuk Monastery. The gigantic north rocky walls of Everest are just in front.After a moment in Rongbuk, we will head to tour the EBC which is now at a new site 1.5 km down from its previous location. Apart from Everest, the marvelous sight of Rongbuk Glacier is also magnificent.We will head back to the teahouse of the Rongbuk to sleep the night.

Day 6 EBC - Sakya – Shigatse, 6-7 hours

It is time to conclude our 7 nights 8 days Lhasa – EBC – Lhasa fly in fly out tour and make our way back to Shigatse. We will take an alternative route and drive to Dinggye Xilin viewpoint.

Day 7 Shigatse - Nyemo – Lhasa, 6-7 hours

At first, we will make an early morning detour to Tashilhunpo Monastery, recognized as the home of the Panchen Lama. Admire the largest statue of the Maitreya Buddha in the world.

To visit Tibet and explore the region in depth including to EBC, you must join a guided tour arranged by a registered travel agency in Nepal and Tibet. It is also mandatory to travel in a private vehicle accompanied by a driver and a Tibetan guide.

You will also need specific permits and visa, which can only be processed through authorized tour agencies. Individual applications for these documents are not allowed.

Our Tibetan guide will acquire the permit for our group and present it on our arrival at Lhasa airport.

 Chinese Group Visa

When traveling to Tibet from Kathmandu, a Chinese visa will be issued as a single document for all group members. This is referred to as a Chinese Group Visa, which requires all members to enter and leave Tibet together.

We will obtain an invitation letter from our Tibetan partner, which must be presented at the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu. All participating members are required to visit the embassy personally to submit their fingerprints and original passports, which will be returned along with the visa.

You will have the option to choose between the regular Visa application taking 4 working days or an Express Application which takes 3 office days. Please remember the Chinese embassy will remain closed on weekends. The Chinese Group visa fees are as follows:

 US Citizens will have to pay USD 175 for a regular Visa Application and USD 185 for an Express Application.

 For other nationalities, the Visa cost varies between USD 70 and USD 170 for regular Visa Application and between USD 90 and USD 180 for Express Application.

A copy of our Chinese group visa will be forwarded to our Tibetan partner or guide for the processing of additional permits.

 Foreign Affairs Permit and Military Permit

After obtaining a copy of our Chinese Visa and the necessary documents, our Tibetan partner will deliver them to the Tibet Foreign Affairs Office and the military office located in Lhasa. The permits will be issued after a processing period of 15 days.

Within a few hours, the office of the Tibetan Local Public Security Bureau will issue this permit.

Currency and Money Exchange

The currency used in Tibet is the Chinese Renminbi Yuan (RMB). Currency exchange services are available at Lhasa Airport, national banks, and hotels in Lhasa, and Shigatse.

Please remember the banks will be closed on weekends and that hotels will charge an extra commission fee for the currency exchange. In Lhasa and Shigatse, ATMs accept international credit cards, and the use of credit cards is also becoming more common.
